Hank Greenberg

Hank Greenberg

Does anybody ever draft Greenberg for a non-DH league? His hitting is unbelievable but at a Lf-4 (+5) e15 his fielding has to be about the worse conceivable. Heck, I thought +3 was as bad an outfield arm can get. I wonder if Pete Gray of the St Louis Browns rates as poorly.

Will his defense take away whatever advantage his runs created provides for his salary? Would playing in the Polo Grounds or another home run park make a difference in your assessment?

He rarely gets drafted in an 80 million $ league simply because of his Defense. I have been tempted to many times, but have never had the guts to do so!

I did drop and add him late in a season that I was out of anyway, and he put up HUGE numbers!

Greenberg, H. R LF 4(+5)e15 88 22 10 9 19 18 0 1 .386 .852 .491 1L 9.04M

It is up to you, but that is a pretty poor defender no matter how you look at it, even though he is not in a critical position on the field.

And yes, in a hitters park, he would be even better!!! :)

Pitching & Defense...

Postby Munich_Man » Wed Sep 14, 2005 5:48 pm

That's my mantra. And yet, on some (most likely) drunken evening I began to wonder... what if I put Hack Wilson in CF Charlie Keller in RF and Hank Greenberg in LF, surrounded them with excellent defenst everywhere else, tossed Pete into the mix with some decent quality/value pitchers? Could I win?

Wel, this team started out 1-8, but have since rebounded nicely... at one point in this early season managed to get to 4 games over .500 and lead the division. They are currently sitting in 2nd place, only 3 games out.

Normally, I would not touch Hack or Greenberg in anything other than a DH league, an of course only play Keller in LF, but I guess I was feeling a bit squirrelly (or weaselly).

Time will tell if the defensive liability will really kill me, or just keep me around .500.

Used him twice as an LF in Fenway '67:

Greenberg, H. R LF 4(+5)e15 635 168 59 51 163 83 0 16 .353 .715 .427
Greenberg, H. R LF 4(+5)e15 664 162 65 55 158 94 5 9 .366 .746 .441

Both teams made the playoffs.
