All-Nickname Team

This my 25-man roster of famous ballplayers who most people didn't know what their first name was.

C - Yogi and Gabby
1B - Boog and Moose
2B - Red
3B - Pie and Pepper
SS - Rabbit and Pee Wee
LF - Babe and Dusty
CF - Duke and Hack
RF - Dixie and Chick
SP - Cy, Rube, Dizzy, Dazzy, Chief, Catfish, Whitey
RP - Goose, Sparky, Tug

The Negro League players have the best nicknames of all. Who can top ones like Superman, Double Duty, Ghost, Cool Papa, Tubby, Jelly, Fats, Bingo, and animal names like Turkey, Mule and Frog?

I still think Oil Can belongs in the nickname hall of fame.

Oil Can is an all-time classic. I'd prefer it over "Rube" since it's not a name you instantly associate with only one player. Waddell, Marquard, Walberg and Benton for instance.

Some folks are missing the key here... Someone whose nickname basically eliminated their real name from use. In Basketball, you'd have Dr. J, Sleepy Floyd, World B Free, Jelly Bean Bryant, Smush Parker, etc.

NEL players are indeed the best for this. I'd throw Reb Russell onto the white guys list. And Lefty (twice... Grove and Gomez).

Could you make a pitching staff of players nicknamed Lefty and Dutch?
