My last team-Stratomatic statically does not play fair

You had a number of problems with this team.

1. Except for Hoffman, you had no reliever who could get lefties out as well as he could righties.

2. Your outfield defense was pretty poor for this salary cap level.

3. You only had two guys (Walker and Simmons) with more than 43 natural OB against RHP. Five of your 9 regulars are under 40. This is awful at this cap level.

4. You had the same problem against LHP, with only Simmons and Larkin over 42 natural OB and SIX (!!) guys under 40. I'll bet you had the lowest on-base percentage in the league, by a lot.

That being said, I have been playing strat since the original edition, and I've played over 6,000 games here and I'm still learning new stuff.

I will repeat advice from one of the superstars here - play live drafts if you're new to the site. The player pool is much smaller, only about 600 guys if you want to get nuts and about 400-450 for sensible people. There was a thread on here recently where some hero posted the average draft position for the 16 drafts he was involved in. Save that thread and use it as a guide. Warning - drafts move really fast! Be prepared. In my first live draft my first 3 picks were, in order, Hornsby, Wagner, and Eddie Collins! (Oops!).

An attractive alternative is to join franchise leagues, where you are assigned a franchise randomly and must pick your team from a reduced subset. Andy Cummings is starting one now, with several openings. I'm mostly through with another one of his and have learned a lot about what works.

What is natural OB and where do I find it (or how do I calculate it). I love that there are always new suggestions for evaluating your team on these boards!

By natural OB, I meant hits + walks, ignoring ballpark singles and homers. You can get the numbers from Diamond Dope in a number of ways, the easiest is to go to "pool" and choose "zero park effects" for your ballpark.
