And Then The Trades That Are Declined

Damn, I was hoping I'd get Pete for Pop Lloyd.

A couple of guys suggested no one trade with him to discourage that sort of thing. I was one of them. So there was no formal, collective agreement. I think people just saw the wisdom of it. Plus if you've played live drafts with Merm you inevitably receive a deluge of one sided trade offers. He's not a reasonable guy.

Not true, that guy will come off the bench and with no penalty I'll take wells and you can have Mendoza.

[quote:1ec4254726="nevdully's"][quote:1ec4254726]What does accepting Alexander do for our unknown protagonist? Lower the ERA of one starting pitcher about 1.00. Assuming 270 innings that results in 30 runs saved.

Yeah I guess the 1.00 lower ERA which translates in X less runs is w-a-y more important than the 4 more wins Pete would get him over his 4th starter (according to DD)[/quote:1ec4254726]

Well yes since the trade while netting him 4 wins nets you 6 wins and he is now 2 games further down. There is no question the trade makes his team better, that is obvious. Less obvious is the trade makes you even better and therefore the outcome would be a lesser chance of winning the division,

[quote:9212c914e3="Petrosian"]Would you prefer monopolize to hoarding? Probably stockpiling is the most accurate word, but whatever. The fact that everyone drafts 10 pitchers is quite beside the point and you know it. In order to get the staff you drafted you pretty much had to rank your top 6-8 draft picks as pitchers. The strategy is clearly to get as many of the top pitchers as possible (including relievers e.g. Dale Murray). You then use them as trade bait. As I said before it's a perfectly legitimate strategy. Especially for someone who likes to trade. And you've been doing it as long as I've played ATG. Back in III you used to stockpile 2bmen. Even at 80M autodrafts.

Sometimes the best way to counter the stockpiling/hoarding/monopolizing strategy is to not trade with the guy. We all did it one league to Merm in a live draft, he drafted starting pitchers for the first six rounds. Nobody traded with him and he was stuck with a horrible team. So the other guy's strategy is legitimate too --my whole point in even posting on this thread.[/quote:9212c914e3]

That is exactly the point. I don't know what the issue is. Both Nev and the other guy have legitimate strategy. I left that part between the lines, but Petrosian made it pretty clear.

This has been a very interesting thread. I may have changed my mind with every post I read. Lot of different ways of looking at this. And everyone did a great job of communicating their thoughts.

So let me say great job everyone. :D
