Difference between SOM and SOM online

I could be totally off-base here, but it seems to me the two games are like peaches and nectarines, similar in a lot of ways, but still very different.

SOM is terrific for "baseball nerds" who want to re-create past seasons and match up one roster against another to see what would happen if they played each other in real life, either head-to-head or by yourself. Realism is very important.

SOM online on the other hand, is a resource allocation puzzle, where we try to maximize runs scored vs. runs allowed differential by picking players based on value relative to their performance potential in their home park and divisional opponents. A person can only have a passing interest in baseball realism, but love playing the online game because they enjoy analyzing statistical probabilities and it appeals to a competitive nature to build a better team than the other guys.

I think it's possible many of the people that absolutely love the board game hate the online version, and vice-versa.

3 different formats (if you count the computer game as a 3rd) and i enjoy them all....they all have pro's and cons...

I play mostly the computer game and have done so since 1999..i had stopped playing Strat for about 7 years prior to that. I enjoy the TSN SOM game because of the competition and camaraderie with fellow managers. I love playing face to face and actually rolling the dice but its tough organizing a league.

I love them all. My preference would lean towards face to face, but it's all but impossible to find people with a similar passion to make the time to get together. My son and I get together once a week to play. I cook dinner, and we usually get a couple of games played. We are doing a massive tournament of World Series teams, randomly matched up against each other. We may never finish (we are currently playing the '03 Marlins vs the '60 Pirates), but we have a lot of fun. It's usually the high light of my week, and it's nice to be able to make all of the moves that HAL tends to screw up. That said, I very much enjoy playing on line, mainly for the fantasy aspect of seeing Aaron, the Mick and Ted Williams (for example) patrolling the OF on the same team. And, speaking with very knowledgeable people about the game we all love. I have learned a lot from the people here.

As a long time board game player,the on line game was a gift from the Gods. I hadnt played in a board game league for about 20 years when an old friend of mine called to tell me about the on line game. I have been hooked ever since. I think the 80m or 60m game is the best for accuracy and the 140 and 200m games are a tease,you look at your roster before the season starts and say WOW this team cant lose and then reality hits because everybody else has a cant lose roster too and you wind up going 80-82 and think ill join another. Overall this has been great and most of the guys have been good humored and fun to interact with.

loved the[b:ef4481b6d8] board game[/b:ef4481b6d8] and[b:ef4481b6d8] holding the card[/b:ef4481b6d8] in your hand as you roll the dice it almost feels like your [b:ef4481b6d8]breathing life[/b:ef4481b6d8] into the players...the [b:ef4481b6d8]cd-rom is good[/b:ef4481b6d8] and helps you get through a season lighting fast and you can make fantasy teams up effortlessly...the [b:ef4481b6d8]on-line [/b:ef4481b6d8]game is[b:ef4481b6d8] interesting[/b:ef4481b6d8] but not as easy as it looks..........bottom line...[b:ef4481b6d8]love em all[/b:ef4481b6d8]
