Another HAL horror story, or Sambito, the forgotten closer!

Another HAL horror story, or Sambito, the forgotten closer!

It's game 5 of the Finals in Season One of my Barnstormer's Tour team. With a 3-1 games lead and Pete on the mound, I'm feeling pretty good, even though I am playing in my opponents home park of Baker. Things are well in hand going in to the bottom of the 9th, with my team up 4-2. Pina is on the mound for me. He is set to close vs RHs (only). He gives off a lead single to L. Parrish, RH hitting catcher. Other team brings in LH PH Bill Buckner off of the bench. LH hitting Yaz and Ott follow behind him. It's a perfect opportunity for HAL to bring in my closer specialist vs LHs, Sambito. Sambito is well rested. He has not made an appearance in the Finals, and has pitched only 1/3 of an inning in the entire playoffs. He is set to close vs LHs (only), do not appear until 9th inning. With this perfect situation for Sambito, HAL elects to leave RH Pina in, who promptly gives up a walk to Buckner, a two run triple to Yaz (tying the game) and then a two run homer to Ott. Game over! Sambito sits in the pen, shaking his head in disbelief. Why didn't HAL bring in Sambito? Who can know the mind of GOD/HAL?!  I still enjoy a 3-2 game advantage, and we go back to MY home park of Forbes, with Clemens and Pfiester scheduled to pitch for me. I should feel pretty confident, but this abuse by HAL leaves me with a creeping dread...

Gotta send this to Bernie also.

There is just no sensible explanation for HAL's logic here, and I think if we can get Bernie involved and keep him accountable he'll make things right.

ATG does seem to take a back seat to the other games so I think it's important to be consistent in reminding Bernie we're here and these fixes are very important.

As painful as I find it, I will go back to reading boxscores again so I can do my part too. I think I stopped reading the boxscores the night [b:738bc04605]HAL pinch-hit for my pitcher in the top of the 5th while leading [/b:738bc04605]2-0 and pitching a no-hitter. (I did win though) yet in another league [b:738bc04605]when trailing by 5 in the bottom of the7th and bottom of the 9th innings HAL DID NOT pich-hit for my pitcher[/b:738bc04605] (R. Caldwell)

I sent Bernie this post in an e-mail, asking for his input. Would be interested in seeing his comments.

Modmark,

Hmm. I can't explain this one but it does indeed seem to me a perfect situation for Sambito there. What I CAN say is that this example pinpointed a crucial part of the code I had not watched before but will follow very closely going forward. I know I say this kind of thing often, but it's always true - you can imagine the complexity involved with programming effective A.I. - and especially with this case, because I think this could be an important piece of the puzzle. So thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Yes, thanks for your prompt response, Bernie. Fixing the BP issues for ATG3 would be appreciated by all, believe me. This stuff happens way too frequently, to everyone, and I am sure a fix can be found. I wish I was a programmer, and could offer some specific suggestions, but alas, I don't know computer codes from zip codes.

Yes yes! Fix the code so HAL will actually be slave to our commands instead of his exhibiting an obvious case of ADD in late innings!
Go Bernie Go!!! :D
