Comparisons from my '41 SOM Red Sox season to ACTUAL year.

I don't know how many of you have played/still play the actual tabletop dice version of SOM baseball. I started playing when I was 16, and I still play today, at 50 years of age. One of my favorite things to do is replay a team from a particular year (usually the Red Sox, but not always). Anyway, I just completed replaying the '41 Red Sox season. Had to see if Ted could hit .400 for me. I played their actual '41 season schedule, and used the SOM suggested lineup all season. I did NOT adhere to the actual pitching matchups, however, but I'm sure mine were pretty close. It's fun to compare the stats from your replay season to the ACTUAL stats the player put up that year. For comparison sake, here are MY seasons from some Red Sox players, vs their ACTUAL stats, at the point their real life Plate Appearances were reached.

Ted Williams (ACTUAL) - .406 Avg, .553 OB%, .735 SLG%, 37 HR, 120 RBI, 147 BB.
Ted Williams (REPLAY) - .435 AVG, .567 OB%, .789 SLG%, 42 HR, 146 RBI, 138 BB. [i:f60ea74b78]His SOM card is SICK, btw. Would have to be $16m+, if it was used in ATG2! [/i:f60ea74b78]
Jimmie Foxx (ACTUAL) - .300 Avg, .412 OB%, .505 SLG%, 19 HR, 105 RBI, 93 BB.
Jimmie Foxx (REPLAY) - .304 AVG, .421 OB%, .531 SLG%, 19 HR, 108 RBI, 101 BB.
Joe Cronin (ACTUAL) - .311 Avg, .406 OB%, .508 SLG%, 16 HR, 95 RBI, 82 BB.
Joe Cronin (REPLAY) - .305 AVG, .395 OB%, .500 SLG%, 14 HR, 90 RBI, 84 BB.
Bobby Doerr (ACTUAL) - .282 Avg, .339 OB%, .450 SLG%, 16 HR, 93 RBI, 43 BB.
Bobby Doerr (REPLAY) - .279 AVG, .330 OB%, .412 SLG%, 13 HR, 95 RBI, 40 BB.
Lou Finney (ACTUAL) - .288 Avg, .340 OB%, .400 SLG%, 4 HR, 53 RBI, 38 BB.
Lou Finney (REPLAY) - .288 AVG, .350 OB%, .401 SLG%, 5 HR, 44 RBI, 50 BB.
And some pitcher comparisons, at the same point actual IP was reached...
Dick Newsome (ACTUAL) - 19W-10L, 4.13 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 79 K, 13 HRs allowed.
Dick Newsome (REPLAY) - 15W-11L, 4.93 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 82 K, 18 HRs allowed.
Charlie Wagner (ACTUAL) - 12W-8L, 3.07 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 51 K, 14 HRs allowed.
Charlie Wagner (REPLAY) - 10W-9L, 3.42 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 62 K, 7 HRs allowed.
Mickey Harris (ACTUAL) - 8W-14L, 3.25 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 111 K, 6 HRs allowed.
Mickey Harris (REPLAY) - 13W-9L, 3.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 106 K, 8 HRs allowed.
Lefty Grove (ACTUAL) - 7W-7L, 4.37 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 54 K, 8 HRs allowed.
Lefty Grove (REPLAY) - 13W-2L, 3.43 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 59 K, 8 HRs allowed.
Joe Dobson (ACTUAL) - 12W-5L, 4.49 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 69 K, 8 HRs allowed.
Joe Dobson (REPLAY) - 6W-7L, 4.37 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 68 K, 8 HRs allowed.

MY Red Sox finished at 88-66, five games better than the actual '41 squad did. Even better, they went 14-8 against those damn Yankees! Now, I will replay the '41 Yankees, to see if they will repeat as league champs, or be knocked off by the Red Sox. Can Joe D hit in 56 straight? I'll let you know in a month or two. :)

That indicates the cards are actually pretty close doesn't it?

I have done this too. I replayed the entire 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates season using the dice game some 25 years ago. I'll have to dig deep into my parent's attic to get the stats, but I think they were pretty close.

I am currently replaying the entire 1978 season (both leagues) on the computer. I'd use the dice game, but I don't have as much time on my hands as I did when I was 15, lol. I remember that season quite vividly as my beloved Red Sox lost a game 163 tie breaker to those hated Yank-mes. If it gets close in my replay I'm going to trade Reggie to the Blue Jays and duct tape Bucky Dent to the inside of his locker.

Much like yourselfI also started rolling the dice in Strat-O-Matic as a young teenager, and still do on occasion now while also in my 50's. I have literaly played thousands of solitare games, for much of my life I had the spare bedroom set up as "Martin Stadium" and played about an hour a day (3 games, sometimes 4 depending on the series) as my winding down time after the kids went to bed. I kept all my stats long hand on a form I designed, and always compared what the cards said to what real life produced, that is what made it all so interesting.
I Have played many complete seasons, some of my favorites (27, 34, 54)more than once.
The statistical accuracy of the board game is phenominal! Differances of less thatn 10% are not uncommon, and differances of greater than 20% are extremly rare. The interesting thing is that is true of just about every version, basic, advanced and super advanced! Of course you have to be realistic in your play and not allow a player such as Dusty Rhodes (NYG 54 PH/BU OF 20 odd HR, .340 BA, 180 ab) play more than they did in reality. The cards are simply a statistical marvel!
I don't get to play as much these days, the kids are grown and I have remarried since my wife passed away and the new wife is not nearly as understanding of that passion, it truely was a blessing when totaly by accident I stumbled on this forum one day last fall, not quite the same but a decent substitute as my Strato fix!, But I can always pull out one of my old notebooks and a pack of cards from the same year and immediatly fall back into the memories of just how good this game has been to me over the years~

I know exactly how you feel about the game, John. Good to hear from you. I am fortunate I still have the time to play the board game. Like you, I have played untold thousands of games by myself. For me, there is nothing like rolling the dice and using the cards. I love this forum, and the ATG2 game, but nothing will ever replace the enjoyment I get from the SOM board game. Can't wait for my son (Antilles98 here on the MB) to come back home from school. We have some great face to face games against each other. :) Maybe your new wife will mellow out about your SOM hobby as time goes on. I have always counted my blessings that my wife is so supportive of my SOM hobby. Of course, the occasional shopping trip (I HATE to shop) together, where she can splurge, doesn't hurt to balance things out, I suppose. :)
