A Heartfelt Goodbye

Free Rad Man: As a Clevelander, I have a keen appreciation for Veeck, obviously, from his years with the Tribe, and their last World Championship in 48. But who could forget his most notable acheivements: 1)Bringing Larry Doby and Satchel Paige to the American League in 1948 2) Eddie Gaedel's one at bat for the Browns...baseball's only midget 3) Short pant uniforms for the Sox, and the single most important contribution he made to western culture and civilization...4) Death to disco night, where you could get into the ball park free, if you brought a disco record, which was then ceremoniously exploded in a huge pile after the game.

Actually it was between games of a double header and I believe the White Sox were forced to forfeit the second game due to the fans going berserk.

Ahhhh, the American fan. I would make some caustic remark about their inexplicable riotous behavior, but judging from European soccer melees, we have nothing on the world here. I do think that the NFL could do something like the running of the bulls, however, to start the season, except with linemen trampling the drunken fans instead of bulls.

gkhd, you are right! I was watching that game on TV for blow up disco record night. it was put on by the local radio station persona Steve Dahl who came from our fair city of Detroit. Once the records blew up in CF, in between games, that was all she wrote. People flooded the field and indeed, the Sox were forced to forfiet the second game. I myself, not being a huge fan of disco, thought it was funny as ****! Almost as funny as the visual I got of muttdoc typing and peeing down his leg! :lol:

I feel compelled to again recall the infamous 10cent beer night in Cleveland in about 1986. All the beer you could drink, at 10 cents a beer! They scheduled it against the Rangers shortly after a basebrawl in Texas a few nights earlier. The brawl was as most baseball fights, a comic wrestling match between two Parisian men, but to the drunken fan of Cleveland, it was WAR! Of course, they waited until the ninth when it was likely that the Tribe was going to pull out a win. The score was tied at 5 with less than two out and the winning run at third, when the fans could contain themselves no longer and rushed the field, resulting in a forfeit. Oddly enough, there were no more Beer Nights in Cleveland.

My sister and I were at Disco Demoliton Day!!!! We left when we sensed the riot about to happen. Steve Dahl is also a liar. He keeps claiming he was trying to calm the people down but in reality when my Sis and I left who did we see husteling his big, fat, A$$ into his limo. Yup, you guessed it....Steve Dahl!!!!! So much for staying and trying to calm the people down.

I have tought my children that there were four great evils in the twentieth century. Communism, fascism, racism, and Disco. Sometimes civil unrest is a natural reaction to pent up rage and defiance. The fall of the Berlin Wall...Disco demolition night...I see a similarity

1986? What were you drinking for 13 years, Wahoo? 10-cent beer night took place in 1973. -- Zippy (and I was only 4 at the time... ah, my first beer was so good and cheap)

I do not think so. I distinctly remember that it took place at a time when the Tribe had uncharacteristically good hitting. That was not the case in 1973. But I think you may be closer than I was, Roger. I seem to recall Frank Duffy and John Ellis on that team, and they were long gone by the mid eighties. Maybe 1975? I will do some research and get back to you.
