[b:1e4cc87abb]... especially non-glamour/scrubs cards![/b:1e4cc87abb]

I was reminiscing on another thread and remembered some of my favorite cards I've had over the years... two stand out for me:

1) 1976 Cleveland Indians, Dave LaRoche... the ORIGINAL Eckersly closer card

2) 1978 Cincinnati Reds, Junior Kennedy ... something about that card, he always was a leadoff monster for me on any team I put him on. ALWAYS overperformed for me.

No way do we have this many strat fanatics in this community without favorite cards from the past - let's hear what they were! 8)

I don't remember the year but Sixto Lezcano had an incredible card one year against LH pitching. Loved using him in platoons that year.

After that I liked the 61Blanchard card. Then there was the Todd Greene card from either 2002 or 2003 which did not make it in to the online game because it was too extreme.

That was Sixto in '79. His OBP vs. lefties was .729 with 11 homer rolls. Two cards from '77 stand out (my first SOM season as a kid): Toby Harrah (.5019 v. LHP, .4514 v. RHP) and Mike Hargrove (.5046 v. LHP, .5046 v. RHP).

Do you have the stats for Oscar Gamble's 79 card? (He was the original ratioman). I remember I was in a league in 1980 with the 79 set and one owner asked what the penalty was for playing people out of position. We said the worst rating possible at that position. At that time, the worst SS rating was 4e48. He played Gamble at SS and won the league. I've never forgiven him for that.

Sixto "three-six" Lezcano ('79) is definetly one of my favorites.
Also the following:
Schmidt '81
Stennett '77
Carew '77
Gossage '81 (unbelievable closer for me..)
Dusty Rhodes '54 (similar to Blanchard's '61)
McGwire '98
Gates Brown '68
Roger Freed (I forget which year, but he hit something like .398 as a PH for the Cardinals)
Gooden's rookie year

For pitchers, my favorites are Blyleven '77, Seaver '75 and Catfish '75 (about the only time I can remember Catfish not getting screwed by SOM). For surprising cards, the '83 Dave Stewart made an excellent righty platoon closer. He was all K's and one homer and a few walks against righties. I won a league in college platooning Stewart and Carlos Diaz in the closer role.

Nprud is correct, Valentine had a 6L card in 1977 with 20.8 [b:b2be7581a4]NATURAL[/b:b2be7581a4] HR chances vs lefties (it's an advanced only card).

He was also a 1(-5)e10.

Roger Freed

Postby GARYJEPSON » Thu Dec 29, 2005 6:10 pm

Yep Roger Freed all the way 10 percent over the card limit in our league so all Roger did for me was 91 AB 112 RBI's and 1 intentional walk by Rocket with the bases loaded. Next somebody please ask me about Lenny Moore but that is football.
