Treasure Found!

Postby Simon31 » Tue Jan 10, 2006 11:56 pm

Inspired by Modmarks question as to which year Clemente had the -6 arm, I knew I had to go looking for it. That meant a trip to "THE BASEMENT! My only reservation about that was this week all our snow melted and we found out the sump pump stopped working, I'm guessing, sometime last month. That means about an inch of water covering roughly 2000 sq. ft. of basement. No matter, I was on a mission. My Mother had insisted I come over to get all my old stuff out of her house if I didn't want it pitched so I knew roughly where to look. In the far corner on a dusty shelf were boxes of stuff from my younger days. Stuff I hadn't seen or even knew she kept! Comic books, a Captain Action, various G.I. Joes complete with foot locker and full combat gear, my Johnny-7!!! God love her! She kept my Johnny-7! Underneath all that I found the Stroh's Box.
A box of SOM cards I had bought from a friend when his girlfriend made him choose between strat with me....and her! $15.00 bucks for the whole box! Complete seasons of '75 through '79'. A few 80's teams. Many old timers teams, some reprinted only for the basic game but still...
FOOTBALL Teams galore!!! All the old teams from both the SOM company and the reprint seasons from Strat Fan Magazine! Nev...you would LOVE Lenny Moore's card! Long Gains on 4!! Anyway, I found the '61 season and started going through those. What a bomber year for Long ball fans!
Mantle...54 HR's. Colavito..45. Maris...61. Killebrew only batted .288 but against LHP, he has straight HR's in the 1 column on 5, 6 and 7 with a 1-12 chance on a roll of 10! Batting Avg's were through the roof. N.Cash hit .361. Vada Pinson .343. Then there was Sandy Koufax who pitched 256 innings with 269 SO's! What a great season! If they ever get around to ATG III, I would love to see them incorporate some of the '61 cards.
Ok...done with my diatribe. Back to sorting cards out as some of them were still in teams we drafted back in the early 80's. I haven't even gotten to all the football cards yet! I really miss playing FTF though! :D

A woman that would make you choose between Strat and sex is evil, and must be given the heave ho.

I'd like to make two comments. First, I lived in a house for about 10 years where every time it sprinkled the basement flooded, sometimes it would flood if it got cloudy and threatened to sprinkle. Fortunately, I don't live there any longer.

Secondly, it was back in the mid-70's when my brothers and I told our Mom who was cleaning our former rooms to unload the boxes of baseball cards, the Strat and APBA games, the stacks of autographed programs from Wrigley and Comiskey, the ancient O gauge train sets. You get the picture, we failed miserably in being pack rats. :(

Oh well, without yesterday there is no tomorrow.

Exactly, a good woman takes you to bed at 10 so you can be back up at midnight for a frenzy. :D

Simon, I would be in hog heaven going through that stuff with you! Treasure, INDEED! :) Are those '61 cards set up for basic play only, or are they two-sided? And, have you find Clemente's card with a -6 arm yet? One thing that drives me crazy when I peruse the SOM Game Co. site, is I can never tell which of their old timer teams for sell are set up as JUST basic, and which are two-sided for super advanced play. The writeups on most of their teams, if any, are pretty vague and non-descriptive.

You mention old Strat football. Do you have the 1970 Detroit Lions? I routinely beat the undefeated Dolphins with this team. It is the team with Greg Landry's 10.0 yards per carry QB. He is full of must runs and his end run wrong is killer. Plus the defense forces a ton of turnovers. Of course, he got hurt that year in real life - and that's why you never heard of them.

By the way, you forgot to mention Lenny Moore's 7.5 yards per carry in addition to his 61 receptions for 18 yards per catch average or some such.

Was up late trying to sort them all out modmark. The '61 set is set up for both basic and advanced play. When my buddies and I used to play leagues, we drafted all the teams from scratch, so they were all mixed up! Different years, different teams...etc. What a project. But fun! Some of the old timers teams like the '34 Cards, '27 Yankees and the '34 Tigers were basic versions only. What a bummer! So players like Hank Greenburg, Charlie Gehringer (who hit .356 that year,) Babe Ruth, Dizzy and Daffy Dean are only printed on one side of the card. Basic only! The football teams are even more of a mess to sort out...and fix. When we used to replay those teams, we started with a team draft, and then were allowed to draft 6 additional players either offense or defense. That means on all the defensive or specialty cards, I have to erase all the pencilled in drafts. Not like restoring the Mona Lisa but some of the cards are starting to wear through as a result of previous erasures. I have yet to find it but on one of the old Packers teams, on their specialty card, Somebody, and I can't remember who, has straight TD runs on rolls of 2, 3, 4 and 5!!!

Oh yeah...Clemente has a -6 arm in the '61 set. Others have mentioned he also had it in '60 and '62 but I don't know for sure about that.

I remember that GB team. It is the #1 kickoff returner, though I thought the TDs were 2, 4, 5. Take a look at Bart Starr that year. I think his int % is over 6. WHEW!

I have the 1970's Lions! Landry's end run card was the bomb! Thats a team I almost always drafted along with a tough recieving corp because if you didn't guess run a lot, he would kill you! Fun offense to run! Your right about Lenny. 7.5 yards per carry plus Long Gains all over the back of his card! Some only if he was playing flanker at the time but even still, how many running backs in strat football even had LG's on their pass recieving cards? Not many! I have the '72 Dolphins as well. They made it to one of our Super Bowls matched up against the '75 Steelers "Steel Curtain" squad. They lost ON THE FRIGGIN LAST PLAY OF THE GAME!!
