One thing that seems to be a common misconception about this site is that it is supposed to replicate real baseball. It's not. It's a site dedicated to using a somewhat flawed game engine to compete in a game loosely based on major league baseball.
The game flaws are known, and in time will be corrected. It's very difficult to write an AI algorithm that will take into account all of the many things necessary to manage a Strat-O-Matic team. And this doesn't even mention the need to account for the managerial styles of all of the players active on this site.
Oh, they could write an algorithm akin to a chess engine, that calculated all the possible results of every possible pitcher-batter interaction. But then the game sim would take 10 minutes or more to play a game and the cost would be prohibitive. And programming HAL to suit your personal style would take days, not hours.
As one who played the SOM tournament circuit for a few years back in the day, I am used to the abuse of low-appearance freak show cards. (Shane Spencer, where are you?) Setting the game to strictly enforce appearance limits would fix all of these flaws, but that would lead to other abuses, such as using Sutter for his allotted innings, then releasing him and grabbing Radatz, etc. And it would be far worse with hitters, such as Mize 1950 followed by Gates Brown.
The game is what it is. I've tried the super-reliever route, but don't find it to be a sure-fire winner. Obviously, my opinion is shared by many; I don't see a lot of super-reliever teams.
All I can say is that this game has endured for 50 years now, with some evolution of its original mechanics. The game, although flawed, is easily the most transparent of the various simulations available. The statistical accuracy of its model is very good, but the random number generator can wreak havoc. I would guess that the 2001 Barry Bonds card has hit anywhere from 55 to 120 HR on this site. And I'm sure that the big Bruce Sutter card has had 15 or 20 loss seasons.
I suspect that, if they simply ran each league 100 times, every team would win 1 or more championships. That's the way the game goes. If you focus on the negatives, you won't be here long. If you enjoy the positives, you can find an infinite number of challenges here to keep your interest.
