Relief Question

Typically I set up my relievers as you described, a very solid inning eater like Wilhelm as Closer, setup, 9+, etc.....

With this team I have Smoltz listed as "closer" in the first ranking and Mossi occupies the next four slots at setup, 9+, tied and late, behind and late. I did not maximize the position for Smoltz but in this particular scenario that should not have mattered.

Well, with Regular setting, HAL will keep the current RP in ther game if the situation allows, because the Regular setting means any pitcher will be used to close games - this is who you can have a pitcher be setup and closer and come in the game in the 7th and stay through to close.

Also note what order is your roles setup. Is smoltz, as the closer, set as your first choice, or is little as a RH specialist set above him?

Smoltz is set in the top slot as closer. Littell occupies the sixth slot with Mossi in slots two, three, four, and five.

I was under the impression that with Regular setting your closer will still close in save situations but may also be used in non-save situations. But I didn't think it opened the doors for non-designated closers to assume the role of closer. I think the problem may be that the definition for both the specialist and the closer roles carry the same verbiage "leading by 1-3 runs". The only difference being that the specialist can come in in the seventh inning thus establishing his position and superceding the defined closer who cannot come in until the ninth. The specialist role should be cutoff in the ninth if you have a designated and viable closer....my opinion.

Maybe the closer role should be further defined or optioned to the manager the ability to bring in the closer to start the ninth inning and not at HAL's whim. It would be nice to have a setting that assures me that Smoltz will start every ninth inning in which I am leading by 1-3 runs as opposed to seeing how long my .91 specialist can hang with the big boys.
