It's just hard to believe, looking back, that TSN was my ONLY source of box scores (and a week late at that) in the mid-70s. I think that was the market they served for a long time, rural america without access to the resources afforded by a big-city newspaper.

I used to get Baseball Weekly in the 90's and I could not wait to get it and go through each team's stats. I hardly read the articles, I would just go team by team and look at every players stats. The internet is great but it ruined a lot of great traditions and joys. Dang that Al Gore lol

I used to get 'em all. Sporting News,Baseball Digest,SI, Sport (remember that magazine?) I still remember the SI covers with Jean Claude Killy the Olympic skier and Arnold Palmer when he was celebrating his 40th birthday. Is Street & Smith still around?, their annuals were another institution in sports magazines.

I just checked and saw that S & S is now part of the Sporting News, i missed that purchase.

I remember Sport magazine very fondly! One of the many that have gone away; the Street & Smith yearbooks of yore were like presents when they emerged on newsstands!

The journalistic depth we once experienced is but a sad memory, IMHO.

[b:fa43089e09]Sport[/b:fa43089e09] - Was edited by Dick Schaap, who could possibly be the greatest Sports Writer and Sports Editor ever. Had to read it just to see his fingerprints and learn how to write.

There are some good places to read today, Yardbarker, which is basically a ******** of Blogs isn't bad at all, bizofbaseball.com is also good.

For the writing we are talking about, Lupica is the last of that breed, I guess Madden is still in there. Tell me who I am missing. Maybe we should start a good baseball writing link, Drudgeball.com - I know Poz is also great. You can get him on line.

Absolutely. The concept of a daily national sports newspaper was the dream of many a sportswriter and editor, but this was truly the only legitmate attempt. It did not last long unfortunately, but the Internet would have killed it anyway. Having been in the journalism world, it was something I definitely paid attention to. I remember receiving a whole press kit from Deford that was promoting it in the months before launch. He recruited some amazing sportswriters for it, too. It was not a rag. It was well written, well designed, and overall impressive. It was just TOO ambitious, really.
