Finally Webb! Interesting card. Basically a dh but where to play him? Kind of slow with more power than I like in small ball. Maybe best in neutral parks? All will depend on his pricing.

Candelaria 1977 - Dennis Rasmussen ++

Earl Webb 1931 - an excellent LH DH, particularly for small-ball.

As a Pirate fan, I have a couple of Candelaria tidbits to share.

1. He was the all-time leading NYC high school rebounder for quite a long time, beating the career totals of one Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar).

2. My wife and I were at Pirates-Dodgers game in Three Rivers Stadium, probably in 1980. The game was getting a bit chippy, and there was apparently quite a lot of trash talk going on (although "trash talk" was not yet a part of the American language). Late in the game, there was a break in the action as players from both dugouts filed towards the locker rooms, apparently to continue the debate.

The Pirates' delegation was led by 6'-5", 230 lb. Dave Parker, 6'-2" 190 lb. Bill Robinson, and 6'-7", 205 lb. John Candelaria. Candelaria grabbed a bat from the bat rack on his way by.

No one was killed or maimed.
