Bobby Doerr or Jackie Robinson for $60m Polo Grounds team?

Postby The Biomechanical Man » Thu Dec 01, 2005 2:48 pm

Thanks, guys.

I looked at the cards using Diamond Dope, and here's what I found vs. Lefty pitchers in Polo Grounds '36:

Doby’s card vs. L
BA=.278
OBP=.432
SLG=.472

Cash’s card vs. L
BA=.285
OBP=.299
SLG=.672

Burns’ card vs. L
BA=.409
OBP=.502
SLG=.577

I'm going to drop Doby to after Cash vs. L, so Cash could knock in more runs. I'm also going to look around for the extra $140,000 to upgrade my $.50m backup firstbaseman to Burns and get Burns to start instead of Cash vs. Lefties.

If Doby's OBP gets over .375 it would be higher than I've ever seen V LHP.

His power goes waaaaay down as well.

And I still like him :wink:

Good luck!

bkeat,
The numbers I posted above are based only upon the rolls on Doby's card, not considering the pitchers he's facing. So his .432 obp will only help in half of his at-bats during the season; the other half of the dice rolls will be on pitchers' cards and will be much less than .432.

Lineup vs. LHP
1. Robinson, Jackie (R) 2B
2. Alou, Jesus (R) LF
3. Yount, Robin (R) SS
4. Bando, Sal (R) 3B
5. Sanguillen, Manny (R) C
6. Cash, Norm (L) 1B (or possibly George Burns)
7. Doby, Larry (L) CF
8. Griffey Sr., Ken (L) RF
9. Pitcher P

Lineup vs. RHP
1. Robinson, Jackie (R) 2B
2. Griffey Sr., Ken (L) RF
3. Yount, Robin (R) SS
4. Bando, Sal (R) 3B
5. Oglivie, Ben (L) LF
6. Cash, Norm (L) 1B
7. Doby, Larry (L) CF
8. Sanguillen, Manny (R) C
9. Pitcher

So far, so good. It looks like upgrading Trammel to Yount has been key:

Thanks you, everybody, for your help. :)

How it worked out

Postby The Biomechanical Man » Wed Feb 01, 2006 6:25 pm

Thanks to adjustments after receiving advice, my team made it to the playoffs. :D The team looked good, but had bad luck in the semis and was swept in three games.

In the regular season, my team was second in runs, first (by far) in homeruns, and middle-of-the-pack in runs allowed.

The team's success was due in great part to Yount, Bando, and the Oglivie/Alou platoon. Doby was a bust and was traded in midseason for Dom Dimaggio.

Thank you once again to those that helped. It was an interesting experiment, which I thought people might be interested in seeing the results.
