Clutch HR

Postby doug_tucker10 » Thu Sep 29, 2011 5:02 pm

The Cubs and Cards (for different reasons) are probably the best baseball fans. Id like to see the Yankees go over 100 years without winning a WS and carrying a mediocre record as often as the Cubs, they'd probably have 2 fans left in the stands, the Steinbrenner brothers. Some teams are bandwagon friendly kinds of teams, they tend to play in New York or Los Angeles :D Its human nature to jump on board when a team is winning but takes some character to be just as loyal when your team sucks more often than not.

[quote:73585ca7ad="danielz"]As I have said on these boards over the years, As long as the Yankees are willing and able to outspent everyone else by 50%, they will never have another losing season.
For those of you keeping score, last time was 1992[/quote:73585ca7ad]

Red sox spent 160m this year. 50% over would have been $240. Untrue or bad at math?

Is a third generation Yankee fan. I grew up with the 80's Yankees when the Mets were the best team in town. Bandwagon my ***

PS - I married into the Cards. Lucky, but they are really second to the Yankees in terms of winning it all. So they are true fans and the Yanks are all bandwagoners? Not sure how that works.

The constant winning makes up for everyone else's constant whining.

Try reading the post again..i said Card fans were the best with the Cubs but for different reasons...cardinal fans show themselves for the most part as having a genuine love for their team and for the game of baseball. Oh ya the Yankees were so terrible in the '80's NOT, they had a drought with not being able to win the WS every year big deal. Yankee Stadium was a tomb in the late 60's and early 70's, i used to go to the games with my friends when we were kids..always rooted for the team playing the Yankees and one of my best memories with baseball was when Tony Oliva hit 2 home runs for the Twins and they beat the Yankees 8 - 0 i believe. The Yankees during one stretch lost 8 straight games that i went to. The Yankees are easy to dislike, from ownership down to many of their fans, coming across as obnoxious to the rest of us isn't pleasant. I hope the Tigers clean the Yankees clock. Even the announcers are boorish and obnoxious between Sterling and Kay and spazzed out Suzyn Waldman. It's a special kind of feeling that a Yankee haterr like myself enjoys. :D

And in spite of being part of that satanic ball club my 2 all time favorite baseball players are Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth :D (Seaver of the Mets also a favorite)

See James Gang for what the winning makes tolerable.

I just turn my pretty head and walk away.

I've already read some sports columnists comparing Longoria's home run to Bobby Thomson.

THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!

Maybe that's true for the current generation of baseball fans, but that game put the Giants into the World Series, which they lost. This game only allows the Rays the chance to get into an 8-team playoff, so it doesn't seem as memorable to me at least.

However, it's the Dan Johnson clutch home run that really made the difference. But it will probably be lost in history as a footnote, just as Bernie Carbo's 3-run homer in the 8th inning, to extend the 1975 WS game 6 for Carlton Fisk's dramatic HR, was.

To me, Bill Mazeroski's home run in the 1960 World Series was the top clutch HR of all-time, especially since he wasn't a power hitter. Sosa hit more in two seasons than he did in 17.
