How many of you played the board game?

I started with the 1986 set, so having it as a set online is awesome. Loved the dice and stat keeping. Group of 4 guys took 2 teams each and split into 2 divisions. Both of my teams won their divisions and into the Series. Would love to find some Toronto area guys to play H2H.

A buddy introduced me to Strat in 1979. He already had many old football and baseball seasons. He would put all of his football teams in a pile and then we would start by drafting 4 teams each. Then, he would put a select group of teams in a draft pile, and we would get 6 picks each to try and improve those existing teams. You could draft anything but the origianl 3 Defensive cards. We had teams with Walter Payton in the backfield with Jim Brown and Dan Fouts at QB. Of course we kept stats on all our leagues. I love the baseball, but the football was still the most fun I've had playing strat. I really miss rolling the dice! :(

1963 board game

Postby dspeters5 » Sun Oct 09, 2011 8:54 am

I was twelve years in in 1963. I went gaga when the PACKAGE was delivered by the mailman in the summer of 63. My ten year old brother and I played the 63 season that summer. We were in heaven. We bought cards every year until we went to college.

My son and I played many games together. We would replicate World Series games. One time we had the 75 series, Red Sox vs. Reds. Game six, Red Sox were down 3-2 and Bernie Carbo hit a homerun to tie the game in ninth inning in our game and someone cant remember who hit a GW in extra innings, strangely similar to real series. Reds won game seven. We talk about this game all the time, do you remember, etc, etc.

One school holiday we invite Joe O'C aka Tinley Snipers over to the house and we played strato all day. We used 75 Reds and Red Sox, 71 Orioles and Pirates, 63 Yankees, 55 Dodgers and a couple other teams. Joe kicked our butts.

I created my own Negro league cards, one sided. And played against the HOF series cards with their four teams. I embellished Pop Lloyds card and Smokey Joe Williams to elite status. Used anecdotal information from many books I had read. Pop and Smokey were considered by MLB HOFers some of the best ballplayers they ever saw. Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner said Pop Lloyd was the best ballplayer they ever saw. Sorry, Scott Simkus, vigorously disagree with Pop and Smokey have $7 and $6 mil cards. Pop needs and $11 mi card and Smokey needs a $10!!!!!!

strat fanatic

Postby 1787 » Sun Oct 09, 2011 4:33 pm

I started playing over 30 years ago and played in head to head leagues from the early 80s to the early 90s. Ill never forget a series I was scheduled to play in the spring of 1983, It was my turn to travel and my opponent lived in Yonkers [Im from Long Beach L.I.] My wife was in her 9TH month and due with our 2nd child any day. As I was getting my dice and cards together for the trip to Yonkers my ask WHERE TO HELL DO YOU THINK YOUR GOING ?,when I innocently replied I have a strat series in Yonkers [ you probably can imagine what followed] I finally played the series following the birth of son #2. The league I was in lasted for several years and I made some good friends over the years. There was one guy known as Bill K, he was a true fanatic I think it cost him his marrage. I heard he past away a few years ago. I have so many stories about my time playing in that league [all good fun]. I also played in a few tournements and every Feb. made the pilgrimage up to Glen Head to strat headquarters said hello to the real HAL and the went over to the dinner with a few of the other gamers to rip open the package and view the cards. Always angered that one of my players was made a [3] on drfence and Iwas sure he at the very worse would be a [2]. All good memories,

I have been playing the advanced game since 1978, I played Baseball, Football(college and pro), Hockey, and Basketball. Up until a few years ago a friend and I had every advanced baseball season statro ever made since 1977, included past recreated seasons. Over the course of about 20 years we played ten 162 game seasons with out own version of ATG.

Looks like we have now retired playing the board game. When we once could sit down and play for hours, its now hard for us to play even 1 board game.

[quote:0adc1d5b34="motherscratcher"]I played APBA[/quote:0adc1d5b34]

Dude, I played APBA with the neighborhood, had the 66 thru 71 seasons. I lost interest and by the time I was in my 30's and working for the Post Office a co-worker introduced me to Strat. Played in 6 and 8 team, draft, head to head leagues for 7 years (80 thru 87). We would all meet at one of our housed and play 6 games on Monday nights. Only played an 81 game season and would only allow players to use 60% of the PA's during the regular season. We even had an awards banquet and gave out trophys. I remember my first season, Mike Schmidt led the league in homers and RBI's, but it seemed like he only hit when it didn't matter, I used to say "C'mon you pig, do something that counts". He was given the "pig of the year" award. lol I also remember losing the world series one year on a walk of homer in the 7th game by Pedro Guerrero....[b:0adc1d5b34]THE PIG[/b:0adc1d5b34]

It's too bad the board game takes so much time, because the really fun part was being there to see the reactions when something totally odd came off. My favorite memory from playing face to face was when I sent Elroy Face (yeah, I know) against a lineup of bashers and he struck out 15 in a 2 hit shutout. My friend threw the cards all over the room - it was priceless.

Was introduced to strat by a friend in 1969 at age of 15. My first set was the 1970 season. I played just about the entire 1970 season. I kept stats in composition books. Most of the games I played solitary but did play alot with a friend. One evening he spent the night with me and we played 21 straight games. It took us about 30 minutes to play a game so we had played for 10 1/2 straight hours. My 1970 cards were handled so much that if they were baseball cards they would be in VG condition. Rounded corners and very worn. To this day I can still remember just about every single players stats because I had looked at those cards so many times. I continued playing the board game at a slightly slower pace for many years. My mother-in-law gave me the new teams every year for a Christmas present for about 15 years in a row. My oldest son started playing with me when he was old enough. We always took cards with us when we went on vacations and would play tournaments. So many great memories. :)

I started playing in 1968 at age 13 after ordering the game from an ad in the back of The Sporting News. I was instantly hooked and recreated the entire 1967 season, keeping stats for each team in separate notebooks.

In graduate school, I started a H2H live draft league that was a blast. A handful of the league managers went on to become college professors and started leagues at their institutions. At one point I could trace about ten universities that had SOM leagues that descended from the one I started.

I found out about SOM online from a colleague named Mickey who was named after Mickey Mantle. Playing online is fun, but is no substitute for head to head competition, where you can personally witness the opposing manager going into apoplexy.

Rolling Dice!

Postby mjruth » Wed Oct 12, 2011 1:13 am

I played the entire 1986 season it took me 8 years to complete with every stat kept meticuously. The divisions were won by Houston the Mets and Angels like in real baseball however the Tigers dominated with over 100 wins in the AL East. The Angels beat the Tigers in 7 and then beat the Mets in 7 to win the World Series. Schmidt and Mattingly were MVP's. Mike Schmidt had a night to remember with 4 Homeruns a Double and 14 rbi's breaking Sunny Jim and Mark Whiten's record. I could go on forever about 1986 and was pleased when strat came out with my glorious season!
