New Theme League - Birthday League - SIGN UPS IN PROGRESS

Postby rjohaire » Fri Jan 06, 2006 1:01 pm

I'm only in for April, not because of the players (I don't know who was born in April) but because it's my favorite month.
I'm a purist and would have to drop out if there is any trading or FA moves outside your month - I find it very hard to believe that any month won't have enough quality players - esp an 80 mil league.

Does anyone have an Excel file that lists all players and includes their eligible positions? My thought is that we could use the file, research the players birthdays and then people can use the autofilter feature in the file to list out (for example) all of the 2B or CF or SP that were born in a given month.

I am not an Excel guru by any means, but I could set up the file so that on the first tab you select the position and the month that you want to see and then Excel does the rest.

It was interesting to see the list of additional people that were posted for July (?) that were not in the original list. Similar to playing the alphabet theme league (which I am wrapping up this week), I think that getting the "perfect" roster will be difficult and that you will have decisions to make.

I love the 12 season idea on this theme with no trading, First of all that would even out all the inequalities if such truly exist which I think would be slight in an 80 mil league. Second, it lets you try different players, different ideas.
I agree there should be no trading in this theme - doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

How many that are all ready signed up would we lose if we went to the 12 season, no trade idea?

Sorry...I love to trade (you know that Marge)...and I cannot honestly commit to 12 seasons (I do not know where I will be in 96 weeks....sorry...

no hard feeling if you proceed without me....and someone else takes May

[quote:6259e5aaf6="Merm"]Some others in July not listes are...Lanier, Canseco, Meusel, Drysdale, Worrell, Keller, W.Wilson, Coveleski, Oliva, Doyle, Lyle and others...[/quote:6259e5aaf6]

Sorry to disagree, Merm, but Keller and Worrell were both born in September (Todd's brother Tim was a July baby). Nevertheless, your point is well stated. If you see all the players available per month, you'll realize that each month can field a competitive team.

As for trades, free agents and 12 team leagues, I'm up for anything. If it gets thing off the ground, then we can keep it simple and just choose from our own months.

No trading a/o a 12 season commitment knocks me out. Theme leagues with no trading (i've done a few) SUCK! and I have a 12 season commitment right now and another long term keeper league.

I really like Rose's twist on this... 12 rounds, one month per round... or do 24 rounds and flip the order (would need to use the position draft template on Penn's site for these).

We have 12 managers interested...I thought if everyone picked a month, we could keep everyone happy and then solve disputes later...If someone wants May, I'll flip ya for it.

It's doctrcpa's league...I'll go with what he says.

1. doctrcpa -
2. Ite9760 - February
3. bkeat23 -
4 rjoh - April
5. Merm - May
6. agabriel -
7. Valen -
8. Novie - August
9. FAaron - September
10. *rosenthm - October
11. Palanion
12. errormagate - December

MERM - I got the file. Thanks. :)

I have started looking at the birthday months for players and looked at the Catcher position. There are 104 players that can play catcher.

Here is the split: All months have between 6-12 players each.

For catchers with a salary of >$2M, the split is 1-7 players in each month (jan/mar/may = 1; nov=7). I chose $2M as an arbitrary salary number. There are 34 catchers with salaries >$2M.

There have been a lot of interesting suggestions posted above. I think it makes sense to see what we are working with on the birthday splits before proposing some final decisions. While a 12-month theme commitment would be interesting and would even everything out for everyone, I am not sure if I would be able to commit to that.

I will continue to post some updates as I go along in researching the birthdays. Keep the ideas coming! 8)
