Hotcorner, your original posting doesn't give much context, and context is often appropriate for weighing in. However with this question, I can't imagine a scenario that would justify the slogan. I think it is inappropriate.

Bio -- The context I gave was all I could in order to get reaction to the slogan as it is. You are correct about its importance -- the idea of context is germaine to my article. I'll post its URL when it goes online.

[quote:6642929810="hotcorner4444"]So -- the question: In the general context of our society, is "trample the weak, hurdle the dead" an acceptable slogan for high school level athletes? All I need is a yes/no response, though comments are certainly welcome.[/quote:6642929810]

Emphatically, YES!!!

First off, "high school level athlete." Can we ruminate on that for a minute? I think most people might take it as gospel that people need to do their school work before they can "play." But why? Why is school such a gateway?

I think the answer is racism--specifically, white racism. But we know it by the more politically correct terms "progress" and "civilization."

First off, [i:6642929810]American Progress[/i:6642929810] by John Gast, 1872. Columbia holds a school book as she brings civilization to the brown people.

[img:6642929810]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/12/American_progress.JPG/631px-American_progress.JPG[/img:6642929810]

States could not be allowed into the union until the population reached a certain level of white, land-holding males...

Florida officially became a state in March 1845. Texas officially became a state in December 1845. The Bear Flag revolt was on June 14, 1846 in Sonoma, California. The Oregon Treaty, establishing the 49th parallel between the United States and Canada was signed the very next day. You know what else? There was no compulsory education!!!!

So why do we have compulsory education? As far as I am concerned, it is to try to imprint the White Anglo Saxon Protestant mindset onto everyone else. Those who take to it are "successes" and those who do not are "failures."

[i:6642929810]School Begins[/i:6642929810], Puck Magazine, 1899. The children from the recently-won spoils of the Spanish-American War--Phillipines, Puerto Rico, Cuba--and Hawaii now need to get with the program like the good boys and girls in such states as California. Notice how there's no differentiation between the kids in the front row--they were all referred to as "pacific negroes" at the time. And notice the Indian and Chinaman in the corner.

[img:6642929810]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e7/School_Begins_1-25-1899.JPG/320px-School_Begins_1-25-1899.JPG[/img:6642929810]

Of course, the WASPs took to Social Darwinism like they took to Overt Racism. Anything that [i:6642929810]scientifically[/i:6642929810] showed they were better than anyone else was encouraged--e.g. [i:6642929810]The Bell Curve[/i:6642929810]. After the Civil Rights Movement, Whites could declare that there was no more racism because we're simply not going to talk about it. We'll just prove it "scientifically"...

I suppose, "from the general context of our society," that's [b:6642929810]not[/b:6642929810] what we want, but that's what the game was setup to do. Hate the game, not the player.

I could not find a video of the cross-country team with the questionable slogan, but I did find this video of track and field at the highest level of competition: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q3vdx6R9FE&feature=fvwrel

If those were my kids, I'd make sure they stuck to regular track events sans hurdles, in the future. Some people may just not be cut out to be hurdlers. Others like me, just wanted no part of them in the first place.

[quote:aeff115bb5="nevdully's"][quote:aeff115bb5]If the slogan inspires the runners then I see nothing wrong in it. I don't think too many here actually were high school cross country runners or they wouldn't be talking about athletic ego's. [b:aeff115bb5]You are talking about 5 foot 6 kids weighing 120 pounds for the most part.[/b:aeff115bb5] If their actions in a race are actually what their slogan is then that would be an issue. [/quote:aeff115bb5]

but then the bigger guys sometimes even from their own school say "who you gonna trample and run over you little track geek" and eventually the little track geek puts on a black trench coat.[/quote:aeff115bb5]

Nev,
The idea that these tee and sweat shirts would cause individuals to become suicidal psychopaths is ridiculous. Truth is the Columbine shooters never were even in the "trench coat mafia", were very polite to adults and always told adults what they wanted to hear. It is real actions that count, and because the Columbine shooters were polite it was overlooked that they actually prior to the bombings had 1) built a bomb that the police found 2) committed grand larceny for which they were released early because they showed "good behavior".

I would hope we live in a country where freedom of expression is allowed and you are judged by what you do and not what you say, but many just want to lead by getting people to say the right thing and ignore what people actually do.

Kinda assumed since they were polite here is like kinda assuming because many track kids are only 5ft. 6 and 120 lbs they have no ego....

To have the right to express something is ours, but that doesn't mean its a right thing to express.

To think words, spoken, sung or printed don't often move us into emotion, and then often action, is whats being missed here.

So yeah rappers can rap about "Cop Killin" and Imus should be able to joke about "******* and Hoes"...its their right...but don't think it doesn't touch us in some way...Of course not that all will be moved to find God or shoot up a school, but some are. It's our right but its not socially responsible imo.

My trench coat comment was an analogy (ain't sure if thats exactly the right word here but I really thought all would get the dots I was trying to connect)...

And certainly one or two drops of water on your forehead is not bad...but this pervasive obsession we have with being an alpha dog society becomes chinese water torture to some ....and yes, it has, and will continue to snowball into more school shootings and of course the more than occasional teen suicide.

btw clinically maybe a psychopath is a psycopath but still a trigger is needed...A tee shirt?
