Pujols to the Angels

PKB, I know everybody wants to get paid and paid handsomely; I dont deny that at all. I'm talking about the difference between getting paid an insane amount of money by the Cardinals (220m or so?) to getting paid an even more insane amount (254m) by the Angels. Can 3m more a year mean THAT much?[/quote:c8b654e76e]

Well, let's see. Take off Lozano's 10% and it's 2.7M more a year. Another 5% to a business manager/accountant and we're down to 2.55 extra. Then, give the government their 3rd, down to $1.71M per year. California taxes are higher than Missouri, so take that down another 5% (off the 2.55) and we're down to $1.6. Now, that buys how much more for the Family Church of St. Louis, or for kids with Down syndrome, or for people back in the DR. Or for your own kids? Yes, that's a marginal $1.6 a year (really, we're talking 13.5 in take home, maybe in LA... more like 12.25 in St. Louis, something like that).

But add some things to LA. Bigger market (maybe, not convinced from my time living in LA and St. Louis that Anaheim, LA Team #2 is a better market than St. Louis) so more endorsement opportunities, more exposure. Bigger churches to get involved with. St. Louis Family Church is big, but on a St. Louis scale. There's a church in LA that owns the Great Western Forum... lot bigger churches to work your ministry through. I don't pretend to have any insight into what makes religious people tick, but it does seem to motivate some behavior.

[quote:bcbf4cef42="Valen"][quote:bcbf4cef42]There's no way that by taking the Angels financially hostage for the next 10 years[/quote:bcbf4cef42]
With all due respect this shows more about your understanding of Angels owner's financial status than Pujols greed. It also shows a lack of understanding of the impact such a superstar can have on a team's revenues. If they did not believe they could continue to afford quality players down the road they would not have offered this contract. Pujols is 3, possibly 4 times as good as Hunter and Wells are at this point in their careers yet still is not making 3 or 4 times what they are. A contract like this might have put a Tampa Bay or a KC or Pittsburgh in a bind but not a team that is run well like the Angels.

I have personally seen how these things can work in Texas. A poorly run team under Hicks was hampered by the Arod deal. But a well run Texas team in the same market and same ballpark has been able to pay their players well and grow the payroll and as a consequence grow their attendance, revenue, and profits in the process.

I guarantee you, far from holding them hostage, this deal will catapult them back in to championship contention. Without something like this they were destined to be at best a team that could push the Rangers a little before finishing second again. Now they are instantly the team to beat. Upsetting for me a Ranger fan but the truth. A solid baseball move by a team that makes very few mistakes.[/quote:bcbf4cef42]

I've grown up in SoCal and been an Angels fan my whole life.

This doesn't really do anything for making more money at the gates, as the games are already close to selling out most of the time.

Maybe in advertising. All I know is they BETTER win a title or 2 in the next 3-4 years before Pujols goes thru what all players at 36 go through, major decline. Otherwise it was just a waste of money.

BTW, the Angels are very close to a new TV contract with FOX that will bring in Billions. HAHA Dodger fans suck on that, you get nothing now :P

Golly, if there were this kind of brain power put into (choose whatever) then the world really would be a better place...

Well said Andy.

It's a business decision, based upon ability/pride and of course the all mighty dollar.

Was Albert Greedy? Does this hamstring the Angels? Some facts.

Albert left money on the table. It has come out today the Marlins were offering over $275 mil. So he did not take the highest offer. He did not go to the Angels and demand they match the Marlins offer and they probably would have if he insisted. He is the best player in baseball but did not hold out for Arod money. So much for bogus greed concept.

It came out today that the Angels have signed an agreement with Fox for $3 BILLION over 20 years. That is $150 mil per year. So even after paying Albert $25 mil they will have $125 Mil left over. I suspect they will somehow manage to sign enough talent with that much money to be competitive. So much for the nonsense that Albert has crippled the Angels by demanding so much money.

Can we now please focus on how this impacts the Angels on the field which is where the discussion belonged all along? :D

Could you be a little more clear on which of the area teams you root for?
Adding relevance to your razzing of Dodger fans is the report on ESPN radio over lunch that a big reason Angels were able to get so much was the blocking of the Dodger deal by MLB and a breakdown in tv deal with Lakers. Fox did not want to get left out of that market and Angels seized the day.

I think that pretty much sums up what the Angels are doing right now. They are seizing the day by closing this TV deal, grabbing the best pitcher who was on the market this year, and the best player in baseball.

Angel fans should be on cloud nine right now.

One advantage Angels had over the Cardinals is being in the AL they can slide Albert to DH in the latter years of the contract giving him more rest and helping him remain productive a little longer.

I am going to "go out on a limb" and guess that there were 3 billion things that were more important on the advantage front.

Concerning decline at 36 years old...let's just remember Mariano...don't even need to say his last name.
