Why the add/drop penalty?

I have been thinking long and hard about this. Why is there a penalty for add/drops salary-wise? Can anyone give me a solid answer? I would think it would be fun to retool the team midseason, which is really not a practical option once the season starts. It might also get some of those rarely used cards some use.
Also, I would be curious to see which cards get used and how often. Since some of the cards are truly useless, why not cull the herd?

People would just change players on a whim-- it would be entirely too unrealistic. I like the penalty - it makes you think long and hard about making a move-- the pool is too big to allow unlimited moves.

You could change your team every night to better matchup, outguess, an opponent. It would be chaos without it.

Well, I can see that, but why not 1 or 2 freebies? I mean if you get a guy underperforming, why not have the ability to switch him out? I see the argument clearly about unlimited freebies, but a small number shouldnt skew the results and still leave some tinker room. Oh well, maybe ive just had a little bad run lately and need to vent.

I would prefer a much smaller cap penalty combined with the inability to pick a player back up you had previously dropped. You would not be dropping Clemens to pick up Koufax for matchup purposes if it would then be impossible to pick Clemens back up. With that in place then penalty could be dropped to 5% or even eliminated altogether.

The chaos might be fun, though. People would pay more attention to their teams on a daily basis. Making it an option for a league really ain't a bad idea.

I like the idea of a smaller penalty combined with an inability to pick up a player after you've dropped him. That would be really helpful for newer players like myself to learn the game faster. Perhaps it could be a setting similar to the DH rule.

Don't we pretty much have that option with the 200M leagues?

I would like to see number of times a player is used and the pct. of times he is on a championship team. What players are above the magical 8%. Then we would know if Willie Mays is really worth being the 1st player taken in almost every live draft.
