wasn't made. :(
Ted Williams in a TSN 80. mil$ league full of Fenway '67's is worth every penny of his 14.14 salary in ATGII if not more. :D
However in a league full of Dodger '65's he becomes closer to being Max Bishop.
Neither is accurate. :(
Stadium effects are much too severe, and should be adjusted to grades of 0-10 and not 0-20. (imho)
There wouldn't be such a huge discrepancy in a players worth. 8)
or
such a wild fluctuation in won/loss records on similary constructed teams. :!:

Harold Richmond isn't a young man, anymore, and I recall him being very proprietary with his game from reading this or that miscellaneous article. I don't really know the SOM code or Hal (though I have been to Glen Head and I actually did meet him), but is he open to making changes to it? Is there anything Bernie could do without Hal's blessing?

The only thing changing from a 0-20 scale to a 0-10 scale would do is make for less fine tuning. They would just tak a current 8 rating for example and make it a 4. There would still be a 40% chance of a HR. If you just reduced all the ballpark effects ratings by 50% or by 10 all you would do is take away power from all hitters unless you adjusted all the cards to add more non ballpark HRs to them. That would be a huge undertaking and neither TSN or S-O-M are likely to do that.

I think what you are wanting is a squeezing of the zone so to speak. Keep the 0-20 scale but then narrow the actual scores for ballparks to the range of 5-15. Makes sense to me without card changes being necessary but that is off the cuff without thinking it through. I think it would be more realistic but ........... that is again an off the cuff statement.

Michael -
I would agree that the swings based on ballpark ratings can make this game maddening at times. But I think that's partially our fault and partially business reality. Bear with me:
My understanding is that Hal designed Strat-o-matic for team vs team competition, either in the same year or era vs. era. Stratomatic was not designed for assembling all-star teams over all eras, grabbing players from 80 years worth of baseball who would best take advantage of a single stadium's ratings. For example, the number of BPHRs on a 1906 player's card makes no sense when playing in a stadium with 1927 stadium ratings. Same with 1968 pitchers being plunked in a 1987 stadium. The games were so different between years that the ballpark ratings for players don't match up with the ballpark rating for stadiums used in a different year/era.
My other understanding is that part of TSN's licensing agreement with Strat-o-Matic is that they can't mess with the cards in any way, shape or form. The card changes we see in ATGIII comes from converting certain teams to the super advanced set, not from TSN's arbitrary adjustments to make the game play more realistically.
I'm in total agreement with you that some sort of moderation in BP ratings would make the game more realistic and less unbalanced. But I also believe that it cannot be done, because of both licensing and the inconceivable time it would take to recalculate thousands of cards (because you'd have to review both the players and the stadiums). This is one of the quirks of the online game that make it a different challenge from the board game.

Seems they re-priced almost every existing card anyway.

just like when ATG1 -> ATG2, they always reprice the entire set.
The difference this time is they actually gave Def. it's proper weight.
I'm not sure what ballpark stats was used to generate the prices, I know it's somewhere neutral. Now maybe it was moved from 11-11 for HR to 8-8 ir something else which could exlpain the drop for HR hitters.
There are still bargains, but yes the pricing is more equal this time, and it will probably get more equal the next time. That is what has happened with the 200x games, now with 06, the pricing leaves almost no bargains.

I'm curious then how all of the new *s (for pitchers like Taylor and Feller) were added this time around, and what about all the cheap SP who now are only RP? Was this a SOM mandated change, or did TSN do it on their own?
Myself I don't believe in the * at all (I used to set the threshold for my own leagues at 290 or 300 IP) and this that should be awarded much more judiciously.
But that's just my opinion.
