It is generally a bad idea to drop/add in mid season, but not always. I have come to believe that certain high $$ players are "destined" to have lousy seasons, much below even one's lowest expectations, but it is difficult to take the $3M hit. Examples include Ruth with 38 HRs at Polo and Mantle hitting .250 vs RHs at Polo (hmmm, maybe its a Polo jinx!).
That said, I dropped Ruth at game 140 per above, picked up Covington and 2 pitchers, went from being tied for the division to losing in game 7 of the finals.
The other option is to figure out how to beat the guy ahead of you that you MUST beat and make the change. Did that on a Yankee 56 team, dumped Speaker and Mogridge at game 130, got Rettenmund and Palmer and made up 5 games and again lost in the finals.
Anymore I like to try and stay close and then tweak only if necessary after game 120.
