i know it's early - 57 games - but bench has missed 15 games and is hitting .190, with a .242 obp, 8 hr, 25 rbi. ballparks average out to neutral.

course i have mike schmidt hitting less than that in another league, almost half-way through the season. had to move him to 8th in the batting order.
:?

I've used Bench on occasion, he can be a doubles & RBI machine, has awesome defense and great speed for a C, but he can also stink up the joint. At one point I was platooning him with Hegan! (which worked out great, BTW).

In my book, he is just too pricey for what you are likely to get, although he can have the occasional monster season. Give me Schalk or Gibson any time.

Bench got off to a similarly terrible start for me in my latest league, and luckily I hung with him.

Ended up hitting .260 with 29 HR, 39 2b, and 115 RBI ... and completely shut down opponents running games.

Still, I would agree, hes likely a shade to pricy for what he gives you.

I've got/had Bench a few times. good power rbi & defense. His bat avg sucks & who cares about a few sbs from your catcher. Also had Schmidt with poor numbers across the board except hrs. They'd both be acceptable at half the cost.

Last time I used Bench, I expected nothing from him and used him primarily for defense. I put him in the 8-hole against righties and the 6-hole against lefties. He promptly tore up the league.

Go figure.

Oh yeah! I forgot. Mr. Seven-Balls-In-Hand also strikes out ALOT!!!!!!!!!! which obviously takes the other team's defense out of the picture for those ab's.

Not sure what you mean here? All the x chart rolls are on the pitcher's card. Bench striking out a lot has nothing to do with the other team's defense.

I think MM meant his baserunning speed, not his SB's. A 12 runner for a catcher is pretty good.

I like Bench in a division with lots of base-stealers. You pay a little more for his D, but he can, as mentioned above, occasionally have the monster season, too.

Bench sucks

I'm in 3 leagues right now.

I have him for 1 team with .210/.386/.298 almost at half way point.

2nd league just dropped by owner due to worse numbers.

3rd league, still active but similar performance to mine.

I guess he is just one of those players.
