Let us take a moment and remember the men and women of our Armed Forces that made the ultimate sacrifice. Also a debt of gratitude to all that served.

Several thoughts about Veterans' Day:

When I lived in London, everything stopped on 11/11 at 11:00 AM for a minute of silence to remember the dead from WWI and WWII. A powerful tribute.

I served in the AF, but only for a short period, so I don't really feel that Veterans Day is my day. But later, I worked in US Embassies for the State Dept. and I will ever have a soft spot in my heart for the young Marines who guarded the Embassy. I remember being in El Salvador in 1984-1986 and was close friends with one of the 4 marines killed there. It was like losing my younger brother. Veterans Day is his day.

I have had a niece and nephew serve in Iraq, and my brother is currently a Lt. Col. in the Air Force. I take my hat off to them and to every person who has ever worn our country's uniform. Veterans Day is their day. Those men and women are the true heroes and deserve our thoughts, prayers and support, not just today, but every day of the year.

I'll join in with a salute to all vets, present and past. I was in the Corps when they celebrated their 200th birthday on Nov. 10, 1975, which was kind of neat. Came very close to seeing combat twice (but never did) when Cambodia took the USS Mayaguez (the timing was botched on this operation, else I would have ended up participating) and again when N. Vietnam invaded S. Vietnam. Ultimately, I ended up just helping build refugee camps in the Phillipines for the thousands who fled just before S. Vietnam fell. Today, I e-mail my grand nephew, who is part of Task Force Saber over in Iraq. He is in the thick of some of the most dangerous stuff going on there. His unit has already lost 5 men, 2 of which he was very close to. Some of his e-mails have broken my heart, as he pours out his sorrow, rage and frustration. Sometimes makes me wish I was 30 years younger and 25 lbs. lighter... God bless all servicemen and women, everywhere. Semper Fi!

I'm 52 and was involved for the last live US military draft at 18 years old in 1971...I'll never forget as I sat in the bar with my friends and saw them pull my birthday and number 356...My heart dropped to the floor. I was really scared of Vietnam and would bury myself in baseball to avoid the reality around me. I honestly feel I would have never dodged the draft but I will admit that I was scared. Some of my friends went high in the draft but most didn't go. I have nothing but true admiration for anyone that was and is part of our great military. The question of the day on CNN was "Veteran Day's---Have we forgotten". Do people really forget? WOW-- how could that be with our children giving their lives today.... I will never forget this holiday....To all SOM people who have and are serving in the military....I cannot thank you enough...Bobby
