Another Newbie Question

I would guess that you don't have the individual card settings and manager settings correct. Dosinsky should probably be set mop up, quick hook. You should set manager settings to maximize closer usage, and depending whether you want your pen used a lot, set reliever usage to agressive or normal (or if you have stud SP and don't want the relievers used much, to conservative). On Fingers, click not to use before 8th inning, and slow hook.

I had this same problem with Fingers. I tried every setting there was to get HAL to use him more. Nope.....none worked. In a full season (with liberal use of closer settings) he pitched in about 40 games. Incidently, I had Osinsky on that same team and he piched way more even though I didn't specifically choose him for any of my manager strategy settings (setup or closer).

My advice: since you are paying about 3 bones for a reliever that HAL will hardly use, drop him for a cheaper alternative (i.e., Worrell if he is available) and use the extra $ to upgrade somewhere else if you need to.

Good luck.

I suggest you post your team, more helpful insight would be available.

I have some experience with RPs, but I would never claim to understand HAL completely. :) When I try RPs with a large "bais", HAL seems to lose his mind and use them less than desired or differently than planned. I suggest RPs with a bias of no more than 2L/2R.

Goose is a classic example, never had any luck using him, he gets pulled against Evers when DiMag and Simmons are due up next .....

The exception is cheapie RPs like Garman or Sambito or Pina, HAL will do OK with these guys, occasionally Pina faces Brett with the game on the line, but so it goes. The more expesive RPs with large bias have not worked out for me, too much $$ for not enough innings.

Best of luck, sschu

Another problem could be your interpretation of a "closer" and SOM's...

SOM determines a closer situation as "a one run lead in the ninth inning"...so , if you have Fingers set as closer maximum, the ONLY time he will be used is when you have a 1 run lead in the ninth inning....fairly rare, esp if it is a hitting team....

Alot of us watch baseball, and feel a closer is a guy you bring in to save the game. If you have a 2 run lead, with runners on 1st and 2nd, you should bring your "closer" in to save the game right?? HAL will not do this, because it does not fall under the criteria that SOM uses for a closer....

Save situation, and Closer situation's are differently interpretted by SOM....

for the heck of it ...leave the closer slots open and put Fingers in the set up roll...

if you will note on the card his closer rating is N@ ....that means his card was not rated with closer ratings. However HAL like to use a guy with ratings there in a save situation. Fingers isn't often used in leagues here.

As for the OBP thing...simple ...it must be early in the season and sac flies count agaisnt OBP but don't count agaisnt BA

Well, that explains it. How can Fingers not have closer ratings? That's baffling. Osinski has a 1@ rating so HAL will always use him over Fingers despite your settings I guess.

I had Fingers set as both right & left setup, as well as both R & L closer and Osinski STILL closed. We even changed the location of the game and didn't tell Osinski..........guess what.........he found the park and closed......

Now I know why Fingers is always available. That's too much to pay for someone HAL will ignore on a regular basis.

the reason fingers has no closer rating ....is that season is not one of the newer deluxe seasons.
