I have 4 RP that I am happy with and don't want to use a 5th. Can I set the 5th pitcher's ratings to avoid left and right handed batters? Will that keep him out of the games?

no that will jsut confuse hal and make him use the guy more often....

is the guy you don't want used a relief pitcher or a sp/rp guy....?

Strictly RP. What would be the options with rated for RP only and SP/RP?

I think people do what you suggest and also check do not use before ninth inning to limit innings pitched. You can swap the fifth reliever for a .50 SP with no relief rating, and HAL will only use him if you run out of pitchers. Another option is to take a guy who leans way left or way right and check him to avoid his bad side and quick hook.

If you set a guy at 1 inning max, don't come in before 9th, he will get very few innings. You are better off with a SP/RP guy, as HAL prefers to use straight RPs when possible.

If I want to bury a pitcher, I make sure he's not a straight RP, because HAL will always use those guys first. Then I check him to avoid his weak side LH/RH, max 1-2 innings, quick hook and do not use before the 9th inning. Set like this, he'll probably only see a couple of innings all year.

If you don't want to use him trade him in on a S only .5 or a S/R.
