Catchers/Defensive Rating

I have Ray Fosse 2(-3)e6, and Earl Battey 2(-3)e5 on my team. Battey has been injured for the last 12 games and had Fosse as the sub. In that time, my team ERA has dropped half a run and my team WHIP has also dropped significantly. I know Fosse was an all-star back in the day (and maybe would have kept being one until Charlie Hustle rammed into him). Do certain catchers enhance pitchers performance? Both of my catchers have similar ratings. Am I overlooking something? Thanks for any insight!

Battey has significantly more throwing errors than Fosse. Not sure that played any role in your ERA reduction.
