When did Clemente become all the rage?

I see him drafted high a lot these days and don't quite understand why. Sure his defense is stellar, but he's an injury risk and doesn't look to hit righties very well. What am I missing? Wouldn't C.Jones (who's often available) be a better OF choice?

I think it is largely in response to some discussions relating to in particular OdysseyTiger's "formula" for teams that lead in era and/or whip. My guess is that Meusel, Geronimo and Doby may have also seen an upswing in the value placed on them.

I don't know that he's all that fantastic....but he's fairly cheap good D as you stated and the canon arm which makes all your pitchers better.... if you have meusel - geronimo -clemente in teh OF on a small ball team.... no one is going to take any extra bases on you.... a PLUS for sure .... he will hit for a decent average too. I would rather have Valentine if I had the $$$.

He sucks!... He's always injured,... has a relatively low OBP,... and doesn't drive in or score enough runs.... Defense is overated anyway.... Add to that that he only plays right field and thus hamstrings your flexibility to mix and match OF's (you can't play Clemente AND Cobb or Aaron or Reggie or Valentine)....You should be drafting Cobb, Cobb, Cobb.... or maybe Aaron.... or even Reggie.... or if you want to save some money, get good defense and a rocket arm along with run production on offense - Valentine.... Nobody should ever draft Clemente.... He's a passing fad who belongs back on the waiver wire where he used to reside in almost every league...

That arm doesn't appear directly in any statistic, but it does prevent a lot of runners from advancing to third or home.
He always hits over .300 for me, and I can expect 80rbis as well. He hits righties just fine as well. What's wrong with all that for less than 5m?

He's hitting over .300 for me. I do love the defense but his injury is killing me! I am going to start looking for other RFers because he is constantly getting re-injured.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and my first baseball idol was Roberto Clemente. I was about 9 years old when he died. (It was crushing.) I remember seeing the guy throw a ball to home plate on one (perfect) skip from the farthest reaches of the right field wall.

He's a terrific bargain with a good backup.
