Am I Crazy to DH Yount?

Am I Crazy to DH Yount?

Postby raslavens » Sun Jan 22, 2006 1:33 am

Strange frenzy last night. After clicking refresh for a solid 7 minutes I pounced on the free agent wire and found the following:

Willie Mays
Robin Yount
Eddie Mathews

I was able to grab them all--a rarity for me. Normally I'm fumble fingers when I see steals on the wire and someone usually beats me to 'em. I'm in an extreme pitcher's park and decided I couldn't keep Mathews (plus I already had Weaver) and was able to turn him into S.Rice.

Later on, Yaz was dropped. I had a chance at him and waited too long, but besides his D, he wasn't a great value in the Stick anyhow. Then someone dropped Ozzie Smith. I pounced on him. So, do ya think I could use Yount as a DH?

Team so far (in the Stick, with another Stick, Astrodome and Busch 64 in my division; roughly 8 pitcher's parks and 4 hitter's parks in league):

C Hershberger/Roseboro/Lake
1B TBD
2B Collins or Schoendienst (nobody apparently wants Red... strange)
SS Yount or Smith
3B Weaver
LF TBD
CF Mays
RF S.Rice
DH Riggs/Clines or Yount

SP Alexander
SP Brown
SP TBD (Caldwell)
SP TBD (Wilks)
SP Tudor
SP Nipper
SP Sellers
RP Taylor
RP Wade
RP S.Miller or Pattin

I'd say use Yount at DH and drop riggs/cline for a Luderus or Judge for 1b....

you have plenty a small ball parks in division/league

your going to need the OBP and from those two cheap 1b you'll get it at a premium.

Thats about the only idea I have. Rest looks fine, whatcha going to do about LF?

Should I put Yount in at SS vs. LHP and then DH someone like Burns? Smith is pretty terrible against LHP.

I'm new to ATGII, so what do I know? But arguably it might seem a bit inefficient to pay for two 1s at SS. Yount does commit 16 more errors BUT for the price you're paying for Ozzie you could find any number of DH's with 900+ OPS. To me that more powerful bat would be worth 16 errors. So, if it were me I would stick Yount at SS and leave him there and put the Ozzie bucks into the best available bat. You might be able to make a good trade using Ozzie, since he's a very desirable entity to somebody lacking a quality SS.

Just my 2 cents. :D

Play Yount, trade Ozzie and pick up a DH. One of the advantages of a Yount or Banks is all of that offense coming out of the SS position.

Yes, I agree with the rookie and the others. Paying for both is a waste. Dump Ozzie and use the cash elsewhere.
