Don Buford?

Don Buford?

Postby nels52 » Sat Feb 11, 2006 6:18 pm

I've never had "Ironglove" Don Buford before and I'm wondering what y'all think of this guy. I'm planning a team for an extreme pitching park and have thought about Buford for LF. I'm sure some will say he's way too defensively deficient for for a pitchers' park. But maybe he can get by in LF.

Offensively, he seems to bring a few things to the party -- switch hitter, good OBP, fast and durable. But he's no base stealer and has a neg. clutch. Seems like he might fit in OK in the 2 hole. (And fairly cheap -- do you get good value?)

Any thoughts about this guy?

I've used him as a table setter on a couple of bomber teams and he has performed well. Great 2-hole hitter very few DP's on his card. However I have no experience with him in a pitchers park. Here is a link to one of my teams with Buford

To call him "iron glove" is a little severe for a 3e4(I think). I would say he is more of a hitters park guy, with his #HR and walks. I would look elsewhere in a pitching park. There are a lot of sub-$4.00 guys that play LF, get on base and have little power. Fred Clark comes to mind, as well as a few others with less than 600 AB's, OK gloves and some decent OBA's.

I agree. You might try Fred Snodgrass or Jo Jo Moore in a pitchers park.

I've used him in Baker '15 where he was steady but not spectacular. I agree that there are others better suited for a pitcher's park.

Buford picked up the "Ironglove" nickname during his playing days -- not from me -- probably due to his infield butchery.

I like Snodgrass too, and already have him penciled in on my dance card. Clarke is an interesting idea, but somewhat of a DP risk. I had thought about Al Smith too.

Good input, thanks.

Al Smith is an amazing number 2 hitter. If he is available, I would try him.

Buford has few DPS, decent OBP but regularly hits well below his .272 card average.
Best scenario to use him is a hitters park, where you need a very cheap #2 hitter. But you better have high BA guys behind him.

Highly underrated, I use him as a LF, #2 hitter on small ball teams from time to time, great speed, decent glove, low DP's and high OBP vs. RHP's.

Great value (except for the injury risk)

I'm in this league and I think this manager is considering using him at 3B. I've done it and I think won with it but there are better options I think.
