Another Forbes Thread

Postby Land Baron » Wed Feb 15, 2006 10:59 am

I've been following the advice on a few of the other Forbes threads, but I still need some help developing my philosophy and making waiver picks. My goal was to feature 4 @SPs in the $7M range (Mullin, Hughson, Dean, Matthewson), and a typical low power, high OBP & D lineup of guys in the $4-5M range.

The problem is that most auto leagues now feature anywhere from 4-6 pitcher parks, and everyone drafts the same guys. As a result, I have a lot of holes that need filling in my lineup.

If I go the route of these types of starting pitchers, do I need a 3-pronged bullpen (Quis and Perranoski setup, Murphy closing), or can I get away with just one stud RP? I have the second pick in waivers...does it make sense for me to deviate from my plan and grab a pricey hitter, like Mays or Cuyler? Which of the hitters that I have now are keepers? As of right now, the only one I feel good about is Chance. I'm seriously considering dropping Ozzie for Bowa and using the extra $$ to upgrade on offense at a different position.

I'm no expert at small ball teams, so any advice is welcome.

Here's my take, don't jump and make any moves, wait for further advice.
I think you could do with one less good RP, but you'd need a decent replacement.

Mullin and Hughgson you'll hear good things about, Root, I don't remember seeing on any teams or being discussed much on the boards.

I've been lucky with Aguilera and Bagby Jr in a swing role filling an SP spot, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

I imagine Boyd and Kaat are gone, but if you have another pitcher park in division and not a leaue full of Bakers, Grant can do the job.

Hitting, Doby is a bad fit for your park. Dom D out there?

Chance, Ozzie, and JRob are keepers. I like JRob at this point because he gives you some flexibility with positions when the team is in flux.

I think a lot of folks will tell you to grab Cuyler. Except Petro maybe

Here's a link to a Forbes team, $60M put a damper on a few positions. I didn't want to go with Wilson in CF, Roseboro C, and Crawford at 1b. I have to say the numbers they're putting up aren't a dissapointment.

Just a caveat, I haven't won any rings

Best of luck!

Another variation for Forbes.

I tried this team after a series of postings concerning drafting a Clutch/Strong D/Solid pitching thread.

OF - for now keep Jackie in LF and Doby in CF
Try for mays and settle for Cuyler - put him in RF

If you get Mays you will have to swap out Doby for Agee or some such

Then try for Red to shore up your Infield D.

Look at Sanguillen or Dickey or Gibson at C

Pendleton would save you some money at 3B

If you don't get Red, Doran would be next best choice IMHO

You are set at SS and 1B

Boyd/Knepper/Nolan are available at SP

also cheapies Hunter/Sadeki/Reuther/Yerkes/Vance

Garber and Staley would be a better 1/2 relief punch

How to order the picks ???

Mays is too good to pass up, but Cuyler will suit you just fine - it would seem you have to put them 1 and 2

This is all good advice. I appreciate the detailed answers and team examples.

I traded Doby away, knowing I wouldn't keep him, and put the extra $$$ in my pocket. I agree with O_T that I need to list Mays and Cuyler 1 & 2 on my card. I pick second in waivers, so I'm guaranteed one of them. I just don't know if Mays is the best fit for me. This league has 6 true pitcher parks, and another 3 neutral parks that are borderline pitcher parks. Mays home runs will be few and far between in this league, but Cuyler's OBP will be useful everywhere.

I agree about shooting for Red at 2B. I was targeting Freehan at C, but I'll look at some of the other cheaper options.

I was thinking of playing JRob at 3B, but I suppose I could put him in LF and go with another option at 3B. Pendleton is one choice. What about Gardner?

What are the chances I'll get both Mays AND Cuyler? Slim and none, right?

I'd be amazed if you got Mays And Cuyler.

Figure the guy in front of you goes for a SP...then you get Mays. There's 12 more picks until you go again.

I'd have Cuyler 1st on my waiver if I had the 12th waiver pick in this case
Except usually he #1 on the draft card.

Good luck waivering!

Well, waivers are over. I put Cuyler first and watched Mays go to another team. I'm not thrilled with Battey at C, and Robinson in LF is going to give me a heart attack, but overall, I guess it could be worse. I think I'm at least one left handed bat short, but something has to be sacrificed for defense. I'm still tinkering with the subs, but that won't change the outlook of the team much.

Personally, I would turn Mullin into Pollett. I am also not a fan of spending $8 mil on a bullpen with so much money put into starters. I know it can be tough looking at a lineup like yours and being concerned, but it should get you 3-4 runs more times than not. And 3-4 runs should win you plenty of games.

Jackie should give you a heart attack in lf. Move him to 3rd. Lose Pendleton and find a better lf. You can get the needed $$$$ by losing some pen.

If you lose Perranoski and Murphy and Jackie and Battey

and replace them with Andersen and Borbon and Dickey and Alou

you might like the result
