What am I doing wrong?

Postby dharmabums » Sat May 21, 2011 6:01 pm

I have Babe Adams in a deadball franchise theme league (about the only time I ever get him, is when I'm assigned him), and I can't get him to be a reliever. I have him set as first closer, setup, tied 9+, tied late, behind & late. I also have no rotation set -- using only per-game starters. I put him in every fifth start. But he has not yet relieved (bladder getting full by now I'm sure  )

Any help will be much appreciated. The team is doing fine, but I'm trying to figure out the super Babe. Thanks in advance.

You need to set a rotation and leave Babe out of it. I think HAL will always keep him fresh to start unless your rotation is full.

Yeah, I think if you list him days in advance on the Per-GAme Starters page, then HAL won't use him as a reliever because he is saving him for those starts. I think if you set your pitchers for each series on the day of the series, then you can avoid that, hopefully using Babe in relief during series that he doesnt start. (except do me a favor and start Wilbur Cooper every time you face me :D )

Andy,
I've been trying to get Wilbur for you, but sometimes things just don't work out.

I'm dong this exact same thing, check first or second page for a Babe Adams thread. My advice is set him to these roles in this order and see what happens:

Set up
Cloer
Tied & late
Behind & late

If you prioritize him in set up first I think HAL will tend to extend him to closer more often than not, which is a good thing b/c he pitches the more important relief innings and he gets innings period.

DO NOT have him in rotation at all, and consider not setting a rotation. This way you can set things up on the fly with your starters and that seems to leave HAL with more options in using Babe in relief....

But do not completely dismiss him as a starter.

FWIW it is very tough to get Babe to pitch relief 4 games in a 5 game stretch (100mil). You might want to break up your best starters to accommodate that challenge.

In my experience, if you don't set up a rotation without Babe HAL will always be saving him for a start, with no regard to the RP settings, and he'll almost never be used at all.

Can you clarify your reply, the [i:3d4233fd62]if I don't set one up without Babe[/i:3d4233fd62] part is confusing me as to what you mean?

Your rotation:

Sp1 (not Babe)
Sp2 (not Babe)
Sp3 (not Babe)
Sp4 (not Babe)
Sp5 (not Babe) you may be able to get away with only listing 4 SPs here.

No Babe listed there, so when HAL will look at the rotation for pitchers to NOT use in relief, Babe isn't on that list. If you leave the rotation blank, I think HAL assumes an the most expensive pitchers eligible to start will start the next 3 games, and Babe won't be used.

Set Babe up for max RP opportunities, as others have suggested, he'll pitch in a lot of games.

Hope this is clearer and helps. :D
