Normalization MORE INFO - NEED CHARLIE

[b:fe29865fe4][u:fe29865fe4]Probably the very best case of normalization is this 3 game series[/u:fe29865fe4][/b:fe29865fe4] (and gee it's right on schedule too)

My team has the [b:fe29865fe4]best record in the league at 67-44[/b:fe29865fe4]...Going up against a team 1 game over .500 at 56-55

His catcher is a [b:fe29865fe4]4(+5) E7 T15[/b:fe29865fe4] my team has these guys running the bases...[b:fe29865fe4]Rickey, Ichiro, Lofton, Wills, Frisch and Carew[/b:fe29865fe4]!!!! I should run wild right...got it set at "super run my *** off aggressive" the whole nine...But I gotta get on base first right...and he's in a Petco type park...But wait! In addition to his +5 C, he's got a [b:fe29865fe4]4 E21 at 1b[/b:fe29865fe4], a[b:fe29865fe4] [u:fe29865fe4]4 E30 at 2B[/u:fe29865fe4][/b:fe29865fe4], a [b:fe29865fe4][u:fe29865fe4]3 E28 at SS[/u:fe29865fe4][/b:fe29865fe4], and a [b:fe29865fe4]3 E28 at 3B[/b:fe29865fe4]. So all I gotta do is hit the ball...they can't reach it and if they do they'll throw it away anyway right?

But his staff, what about his starters? Fitzimmons 5m and Weilman 4m not bad...but Catfish at 5R the cheap card (I'll kill him with my lefties....he goes to his pen...with guys under 1m named Appleton, Chief Hosgett (WTF) and Lefty 10.94 Russell.....I should cream these guys with this lineup, after all I lead the league in runs scored AND sbs (hello C +5)

1. Wills, M. (S)
2. Henderson, R. (R)
3. Lofton, K. (L)
4. Suzuki, I. (L)
5. Carew, R. (L)
6. [b:fe29865fe4]Gibson, J[/b:fe29865fe4]. (R)
7. Frisch, F. (S)
8. High, A. (L)
9. Pitcher P

I'm throwin Kaat, Sadecki and Higbe and I'm feeling pretty good at stopping his hitters, especially in his park..

J.Landis CF 3 1 0 0 .282
T.Cobb RF 2 2 0 0 .368
J.Clark 1B 4 1 2 2 .274
T.Leach 3B 4 1 2 4 .21[b:fe29865fe4] costs 3.15[/b:fe29865fe4]
J.Stone LF 4 0 1 1 .308 [b:fe29865fe4]costs 2.07 [/b:fe29865fe4]
E.Flick 2B 2 0 0 0 .333
J.Stahl C 4 0 0 0 .133 [b:fe29865fe4]costs .53[/b:fe29865fe4]
B.Hunter SS 4 1 1 0 .250 [b:fe29865fe4]costs .71[/b:fe29865fe4]
Pitcher

Now he's got Roger Connor and Sam Crawford and Dion Sanders ON THE BENCH!!!! Because you see [b:fe29865fe4]I don't think he's even managing his team!!!

[/b:fe29865fe4]
So what happens????

I lose game 1 [b:fe29865fe4]7-3[/b:fe29865fe4]

I lose game 2 [b:fe29865fe4]8-4[/b:fe29865fe4]

I lose game 3 [b:fe29865fe4]10-7[/b:fe29865fe4]

We both make the same amount of Errors in the series (4)

As I said at the top [b:fe29865fe4]Normalization Bullspit[/b:fe29865fe4]....[b:fe29865fe4][u:fe29865fe4]This game is programmed or coded to do whatever it must to keep won loss totals from going too much in either direction.[/u:fe29865fe4][/b:fe29865fe4]

Stuff similar to this happens constantly.

I'm going to take exception to this rant against my team. This is a team built around triples hitting, trying to verify if inordinate numbers of triples can counterbalance a lack of power hitting. I grant you that the defense sucks (Stahl is out there because Criger (-2 arm) is down for 10 games). I tweak my lineup regularly. I also am convinced that bench hitting is important in non DH leagues more perhaps than we give it credit for. Yeah, the pitching is not the greatest, but you know I must be doing something reasonably correct if, for once, my team is 4 games over .500. I'm sorry if my teambuilding does not correspond to your pre-conceived notions of how to put a team on the field. I know that I am relatively inexperienced compared to you and others. I'm willing to take the knocks and laughs of the community, but I wake up (it's 8:30 am in France) looking forward to reading about the tribulations (or should I say tripulations) of Tax Free.

I applaud what you're doing, and I mean that sincerely. I've always given props to teams and owners that try to win outside the box. Still there is just no way in hell with average sps and a much less than average pen, lousy fielding, probably the worst infield D I've seen, that you win those games without black box nonsense...[b:0917f3eca4]Your C alone shoulda thrown the ball into cf a dozen times.[/b:0917f3eca4]..Nothing against you or your team. Absolutely nothing. But I've seen some of this stuff on my own teams. HAL will not let an out of position player, or terrible fielder commit or allow the amount of errors or hits he should according to the rules..I've had Felix Jose (rf,lf) as my SS for 8 straight games because I had no backup for Honus Wagner, or any other backup infielders....Jose who shoulda been what a 5 E65 or some crap like that, made only TWO errors in those 8 games...and not any noticeable amount more hits either....This game is BLACK BOX!

Let me also say this. Upon closer look it's a fascinating offensive mix and I think you've proven a little something about the power of the Triple.

Thanks, Nev for the kind words. I'm sorry if I sounded "ranty", but I appear to get very touchy (the French would say "epidermic") about my teams, and especially this one. I had been hoping to get Musial (for LF) and Combs (RF), but the Gods decided to bestow Jack Clark and Jim Landis upon me. Since everyone says you need at least one guy to get the ball out of the park, Clark was a keeper (plus all those walks) and Landis has turned out to be the Gold Glove leader in the league (with .385 OBP). It means that Connor is relegated to the bench (except for certain stadiums) and Stone and Crawford split LF against RH with Bobby Clark against LH (.333/.389/.605 against LH without a homerun). I like Connor and Crawford (and Sanders) on the bench because with my staff there is a lot of pinch-hitting, and Connor and Crawford really don't care if it's a lefty or a righty out there. Dale Mitchell is probably the 3m hole that could have been used to spruce up the bullpen. Tommy Leach is a disappointment but he does have 81 RBIs in 114 games. Yes, the infield defense is an adventure (almost 1 error/game and large numbers of hits allowed) but Elmer Flick is hitting .337/.414/.505, 27 sbs, 69 rbis and there's not that many 2B who will do that for 5.33M.

All that to say, I don't know what. I like my team. It's fun, and there's no real way to defense a triple. As for normalization, I'll leave that to those more expert in such matters. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to meeting up with your team again on Friday. The tables will more than likely be turned given previous results. Good luck. I know I'll need it.

Bill

PS Just a word to those of you looking for some fun in a 2010 league. A three season franchise tour (Pelzer's Theme league) is looking a few more players. Starting with the bottom of the heap and working our way through the top. Look for the sign-up on the 2010 thread.

I have Stone on a team for his triples, first time I've used him.

So far so good.

In my next rant for new card requests I am going to focus on guys with great seasons for doubles and triples. Again the theme: boost small ball!

You need to read "The Mouse that Roared" by Leonard Wibberly.

I usually don't get into discussions of this kind. There may be normalization or there may not. But just for fun I looked this up on baseball-reference.com:

In 1962 we all know the Mets went 40-120. Meanwhile the Milwaukee Braves finished a respectable 86-76. Braves had stars like Aaron and Mathews and Spahn. Mets had Marv Throneberry and Choo Choo Coleman. So what happened when the two teams met for a three game series on May 19-21 1962? You guessed it --- Mets swept by scores of 6-5, 7-6, 9-6. Black Box?
Normalization? Or just plain chaos?

I think this proves MLb has normalization. Without it Milwaukee would have won 100 games.

In case anyone needs more proof of normalization I have a team that is 10-20. How can someone as good as me have a team that only wins at a 33% clip :? ? And why did the normalization kick in so soon?

I hear you guys but in real life this would happen once in a blue...here much more frequently. Keep in mind that given example was 40 years old. Still Valen at 10-20 just ain't right. Black box? No black box? Maybe it's a "shades of grey and chaos box" (I like the chaos description :)) either way I'll believe it's in, and respect those who think it isn't.
