Platoons are fine. I use them all the time, especially at C, 1b and 2b.
I don't like your personnel at all. Too many guys who are simply not good values.
You will be facing over 40 percent lefthanders in your own division. Blue, Speaker ugh. Not in your park and not in your division with a Polo, Forbes and Griffith.
Utilize your parks strengths and get guys with value.
For example a Shano Collins, Garvey platoon at 1b could be quite effective and very cost efficient, assuming you pick the right years for Collins and Garvey. When you platoon in your park you use cheap lefty killers and quality righties who hit righties. It's really quite simple.
Chesbro is an OK pitcher for the price, but no more. You need to compute the % of lefty hitters you will be facing in your division and tailor your staff accordingly, never forgetting that your park emasculates lefty hitters. Thus you generally want pitchers who handcuff rigthies, unless your opponents are throwing 6+ lefties against you.
Mazeroski and Sciosia have to go. No offense there.
I'd keep Colavito, Bowa and maybe Rice. Although Guerrero in lf is probably a better option. Just not at 3b. Bpwa might be my only switch hitter vs righties, the rest would all hit righthanded. You could start the cheap Fox or Whitaker at 2b if you are worried about Garcia and the other hard righties and get Beckert to platoon with him.
If you can't find a Mays, Dimaggio or Willard Brown to play CF then you could use a cheap singles hitter who fields and hits righties 4R or better and platoon him with a cheap righty with power. You'll figure it out.
