Lately, I've had some extremely dominating teams suddenly stop performing and sink, incredibly, like a stone into the abyss.

Anyone sharing this experience...?

Its regression to the mean. All the teams put together are relatively "all star teams" - nobody who plays this game is as good as they seem and no one is as bad. To me, a well planned team is one that has a good pythagorean record, irregardless of the luck factor. I've had a couple of teams that scored 100 or more runs than given up and had losing records - it happens. Luck plays a HUGE factor in this game. Of course as Branch Rickey said "Luck is the residue of design"

However, the phenomenon is new to me. Usually, if a team stinks, it stinks for most of the season. If a team of mine is good, it's good for most of the season. You KNOW it's a good team. Lately, I've had wild gyrations...
