What does pb-4 mean?

Joe Mauer is listed as a pb-4

Through 97 games played, he has 12 passed balls

Is this just bad luck? Or does TSN hate me?

pb4 rating is listed in cd-rom as poor

1-excellent
2-good
3-average
4-poor

since Mauer is a 4 ...not suprizing

Actually, pb ratings can go up to 20 - it's a 20-sided die roll off of steal attempts or the X-charts. Among guys you might actually use at C, the worst are Tenace and Milt May (8).

WP ratings are the same; 0-20 off steal attempts and catcher X-charts.

As additional information, your catcher's PB rating isn't the only thing that factors into PB's. For certain roles on the catchers defensive X-chart you actually reference the pitchers WP rating (to replicate catching knuckleballers as the primary example).

So while Mauer may have a good PB rating, if he is catching pitchers with high WP ratings, then he will have more passed balls on the season.

I've been here for about 8 years now reading all kinda exceptions to card rolls....Whether it's all good, all bad or something in the middle, for a game that prides itself on it's transparency it's anything but.

 :x

Here is an excerpt from the rules which I found online-

Fielding Chart Adjustments

When a reading of "P/P" or "P/F" is generated from the SYMBOLS CHART you should use the following procedure to determine if a passed ball occurs:

Refer to the pitcher's WP rating on his card, Roll the 20-sided die and if the roll is less than or equal to the pitcher's WP rating then a passed ball has occurred. If the roll is greater than the pitcher's WP rating then the catcher blocks the pitch, runner hold.

The P/P or P/F that is referred to, is one of the outcomes on the X-charts for catcher.

I guess the fundamental question is, can TSN post the full SOM game rules which govern game play.

At this point I think they are out on the web, but it might be a nice link to have for those that are interested in how the board game really plays, which is what governs the online game.

It is likely that the X-charts are not posted online, since SOM sells these as separate supplemental pieces to the board game (although one set is included with the board game).
