Gonna be taking a weeks vacation and heading to Cooperstown for a few days.

Anyone have a recommendation as to best place to stay? Any thoughts on other things to do in the general area.

Maybe stay at a bed & breakfast? Or be willing to drive a little if you want to save on the hotel. There are a couple of hotels near the baseball museum, i stayed at one of them years ago, It was small and kinda run down (its over one of the baseball gift shops just down the street from the baseball musuem). I love Cooperstown, its a beautiful place. They have other musuems there, the only one i know besides the baseball is a farmers museum.

I visited in 2005. The restaurant across the street has some very good steak dinners.

I enjoyed the batting cages (I think the cages are by the baseball field). You'll also see home plate from Polo Grounds at the batting cages.

The Farmer's Museum is better than the Hall of Fame. The Fenimore Cooper Art Museum is good and they have the Glimmerglass Opera on Otsego Lake as well. Not sure if that's open after Labor Day or not. Never slept there since its less than a two hour drive.

I loathe chain hotels but love country inns. There are a few in Cooperstown that may be worthwhile:

The Inn at Cooperstown
The Barnwell Inn
The Diastole Lakeview Bed and Breakfast

Howe Caverns and the Iroquois Museum is less than an hour's drive as well. Lot of state parks and Otsego Lake is huge and worth a boat rental.
