Duffy and Speaker at 80 M

Am struggling to determine if spending the big bucks for these two small ball superstars is worth it at 80M. I'm not looking for teams that show how great these two perform, I'm looking for teams that perform well with them on it.

Any success stories? Post 'em here. Thanks.

I think you must already know from the Joe the Jet's rankings that there is no way Speaker is one of the best CF options in an 80 million league, not that one could not win with him, just the value is going to be limited and the remainder of the team would have to be carefully constructed.

This one was made with Duffy in mind to provide primary offense in the 2-hole on a one-stud pitcher team, similar to what I had done with the Cobb card that is similarly not a good fielding CF card and can be played at an off position. I do not want to bat Duffy in the 3-hole because of his very large negative clutch so that is why I have him batting second. Really I would not consider him for anything but 2nd or first in a lineup and those 2 lineup spots are good spots for some true value players. The team probably would have been much better but for the 50 games Honus Wagner has missed due to injury.

Overall Duffy is a player in 80 you can win with but I doubt he measures on the Joe the Jet ranking system to be a good LF value.

He compiles information, cans them and sells them. they are pretty cheap, and very valuable, especially if you do not have a ton of time to crunch numbers... :wink:

We already know from diamond dope actuals that Speaker has a .527 winning pct. at 80M and that he thus appears to be a good value at that cap. On the other hand, we have no actuals from Duffy's good card in Diamond Dope. Besides win pct. can be misleading. For example, I have 9 completed teams in ATG 6 in Forbes '57 at 80M with a .581 winning pct. So much depends on the managers that use these guys in the context of the cap. And I know from Joe the Jet ratings that Speaker in Forbes 57 was the 7th best value CF before the new cards were issued. I also know that Speaker is 11 in CF value at League '34 at 80M and Duffy is 6th with the new cards. But the Jet has been very slow in releasing updated ratings for the new players. So I don't yet have the updated Forbes ratings. And Forbes is the main park where I would consider using both these guys in CF. Also the fact that the ratings rank Speaker and Duffy where they do is not something that I just accept at face value.

Thus my question. I am interested in comparing the performance of Duffy vs Speaker in 80M leagues [b:c84a52be00]recently[/b:c84a52be00], since the addition of the new cards. In particular, I am interested in which is the better choice / value in CF at 80M. Jet's ratings in league '34 suggest Duffy is, but I'd like to back this up with concrete examples. And I use Duffy as a CF not LF at 80M. Plenty of usable guys in LF at 2 Million at that cap.

BTW, I only consider batting Duffy in the 3rd and 4th slots.

I'll give up a few singles lost to his clutch to drive em in by the boatload with all the dubs and trips...Gotta love when HAL intentionally walks someone to get to Duffy's negative clutch. :wink:

Duffy's negative clutch vs righties of -200/2160 out of 1110/2160 total chances for getting on base, with two outs you are getting 17.3% outs of your on base chances when you would have most likely scored a run with two outs and then you'd have your #3,4,5 hitters coming up.

Now for my style I like the Wagner with a +220 or a Lajoie in that spot to increase my chances in the 3 and 4 hole and put Duffy on 2nd or 3rd to improve that positive clutch for those 2 (see with Duffy batting 2nd and 1 out even if Lajoie makes an out Wagner's chance of getting a hit has just been improved by over 10% with all those double and triples by Duffy and Wagner's positive clutch. Also my leadoff hitter if he is on frequently rounds the bases and scores on a double or triple.

This magnifies the value of Duffy's doubles, minimizes the effect of his negative clutch, magnifies the value of Lajoie's and Wagner's positive clutch and magnifies the value of a leadoff hitter with a whole bunch of walks. But that is just my way of thinking about small ball lineup construction it very well could be backwards thinking.
