ATG new cards batch #5 debuts 1/30/12

Postby bernieh » Wed Jan 04, 2012 11:36 am

Happy New Year gang!

Here's the scoop on this month's new ATG cards batch.

In the previous batch (December's Batch #4), I started to "poach" some popularly requested cards from our older card sets to add to ATG. The upcoming Batch #5 will consist of more of these cards than before, based on an official request thread I posted in December. This thread and an explanation of the poaching process can be found here.

We're "cutting off" new requests for the purposes of this batch - meaning I'm crafting the new batch from what we've got so far. Feel free to make further requests on that thread, of course, which may be considered for future batches. A big thanks to george barnard as usual for wrangling together the mess.

The list will be sent up the flag pole for salary calculation some time by this Monday, 1/9.

[i:d0c080f92f]I am not setting an arrival date for the new batch at this time[/i:d0c080f92f], because last month I got into trouble by announcing a date before I knew exactly when I'd get the salaries in, and was scrambling at the last minute. The process almost never takes more than a week, but last month it did, and I need to be more cautious this time. If all goes as expected, the drop date will probably be during the week of 1/16 - 1/20, but I'm not promising that just yet.

While we're waiting for the salaries to come in, though, I'll start posting some teasers on Wednesday, 1/11.

Party on!

Ok here's 2 of the most popular hitter cards from the poach request thread.

I do see that Bill Dickey is enjoying a little bit of "Arky Vaughan from FantaSim" syndrome here, as this card has somewhat inflated HR power. I do acknowledge that this is less than ideal. What I can say is 1) I'm making sure it is priced accordingly, and 2) at some point when SOM can deliver the updated cards to us, I'm willing to swap them in (with new prices) if it can be managed. Our site rebuild should make this easier.

You can read the rest of what I have to say about this card-poaching process at the beginning of the poach request thread.

Hey there!

Today we visit the nostalgia portion of our teaser run. You guys asked for a lot of '70s and '80s cards in the poach request thread, and I'm more than happy to oblige. These players, though not historic by any means, provided us all with our personal "All-Time Great" moments growing up as young baseball fans.

Still no exact projected date for when this batch will debut, but I'm making sure that all my prep work is done well in advance so that when the prices come in, you'll see them immediately.

T.G.I. Pitcher Day!

The most requested pitcher card in the poach request thread was this guy, so he'll be making his ATG debut:

Yeah, I dunno what to tell you guys about Max Carey's injury. According to Strat-O-Matic, the card says "Moops".

Here's today's teasers!

This will be it 'til next week. First of all, I'm running out of these and I'd like to spread 'em out while we wait for this batch to come out of the oven, and second, I'm gonna take tomorrow to lock myself in the dungeon and desperately code away on this increasingly nerve-wracking site rebuild.

Enjoy!

[i:d0c080f92f]-- Update, Mon, Jan. 23[/i:d0c080f92f]

Hi guys!

A couple of disco-dancin', lefty hurlers from the '70s that were at the top of the poach request list.

[img:d0c080f92f]http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/images/stratomatic/marketing/atg6/teasers/randy_jones_1976.gif[/img:d0c080f92f]

[img:d0c080f92f]http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/images/stratomatic/marketing/atg6/teasers/jim_brewer_1972.gif[/img:d0c080f92f]

This makes 7 pairs of teasers I've posted already - 7 hitters and 7 pitchers out of the 10/10 that comprise the new batch - so as far as further teasers are concerned, I'm going to play it by ear this week, depending on the updates I get on the pricing process.

Word from Bbrool is that he's almost done with the hitters. FYI, what's taking so long is that I gave him [i:d0c080f92f]27,000[/i:d0c080f92f] cards to price - basically our entire in-house library from which we can poach, so that he won't have to do this again for a while. Thanks for your continued patience while he puts the many hours into this task.

(For those who can't see the card images for some reason, they're supposed to be: Randy Jones 1976, Jim Brewer 1972)[/size:d0c080f92f]

[i:d0c080f92f]-- Update, Thu, Jan. 26[/i:d0c080f92f]

Word from Bbrool is that he's finished with the hitters, and he [i:d0c080f92f]thinks[/i:d0c080f92f] he should be able to have pitchers submitted by Friday, or the weekend. In any case, I'll still make the batch available the very next business day, so [i:d0c080f92f]hopefully[/i:d0c080f92f] we're looking at Monday. Fingers crossed, but no promises!

Another pair of teasers for you, the last of this week. Thanks to River Field View for making me realize that there's nothing really mandating that each batch of 20 cards needs to be evenly split between hitters and pitchers!

In honor of his recent retirement, this fine player will be making his ATG debut! Discuss his Hall of Fame qualifications here.

[img:d0c080f92f]http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/images/stratomatic/marketing/atg6/teasers/jorge_posada_2000.gif[/img:d0c080f92f]
1987 was the first year I played Strat seriously (i.e. not just as an 8-year-old tagging along with my older brother), so this card, high up on the community poach request list, brings back memories:

[img:d0c080f92f]http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/images/stratomatic/marketing/atg6/teasers/george_bell_1987.gif[/img:d0c080f92f]

(For those who can't see the card images for some reason, they're supposed to be: Jorge Posada 2000, George Bell 1987)[/size:d0c080f92f]

[i:d0c080f92f]-- Update, Mon, Jan. 30[/i:d0c080f92f]

Happy Monday!

I got the prices in over the weekend and as promised, I'm plugging them in and releasing these new players the next business day - more specifically, this afternoon. Stay tuned for details!

[b:d0c080f92f]With the exception of Jorge Posada (2000).[/b:d0c080f92f] As pointed out, the fielding ratings on the teaser I posted for him were his approximated Back to the '90s ratings, and not his correct 2000 ratings. I had a brain freeze and chose him despite the fact that he wasn't one of the ones I'd looked up the correct ratings for and submitted to Bbrool for pricing.

So I'm holding him back for now and [b:d0c080f92f]will be adding him as soon as I get a new price for him[/b:d0c080f92f] reflecting his correct fielding ratings. I don't have an ETA on that, but I promise he'll go in the day I get the new price. Sorry for the delay, but we should get this right.

p.s. The ratings I posted for George Bell's teaser were also wrong, but he [i:d0c080f92f]was[/i:d0c080f92f] one of the cards that I'd looked up the correct ratings for so I do have an accurate price for him. FYI the correct ratings are lf-2(-2)e13 2b-4e41 3b-4e37.

I'm in a league where the salary cap jumps from $80M to $150M in a month. The "strategy" in that league is simple - take the cheapest card available for the guy you want and flip it for his best card in a week or two.

So all the "flippers" out there desperately want the worst seasons possible of all the players priced $10 million or more.

Just kidding, just kidding!

First few teasers coming this afternoon!

This (poaching cards from FantaSim, '70s, '80s, '90s) has been an insane amount of busy-work; I've had to manually look up and update each individual card's fielding, running, stealing, bunting, and h&r ratings. But it should be worth it because there are some pretty fun cards here.

Stay tuned.

Teasers Part the First

Ok here's 2 of the most popular hitter cards from the poach request thread.

I do see that Bill Dickey is enjoying a little bit of "Arky Vaughan from FantaSim" syndrome here, as this card has somewhat inflated HR power. I do acknowledge that this is less than ideal. Depends on the price for Buddy. Make him cheap enough and I would use him at 2nd all day!

Interesting that Dickey has a 2 injury even though he has 600 abs+bb's, but I know there are a couple others like that.
