per Bernie
"On a catcher with a range rating of 1, a d20 roll of 1 results in a "squib single" in front of the plate (if the bases are empty, as was the case both times in your game).
Here's the charts - a roll of 1 on any catcher range results in a "W/S"...

... which is a wild pitch if there are runners on, and a single if the bases are empty (see "NO" under "W/S"):

lol -- I went back toward the root of the URL to see if I could access all the charts for the game, and, what do you know, I'm told the images are password protected. I haven't seen the charts in something like 20 years, so having access to them would be a boon.
These charts should be part of the SOM site, plain and simple. Maybe Bernie's working on that for the redesign.

You can buy the X-Charts from Strat-O-Matic for a very nominal fee.

This link should take you to the Wiki site where you can view all of the SADV charts for SOM -
