It's easy to just use baseball-reference.com to match up the stats with the player. Sometimes, the players didn't get their release forms in to the league in time to be included in the general release.
There was a time when the MLB players' union was threatening lawsuits against the game companies to attach their revenues for using the players' stats without licensing them. Later on, they found out how little Hal was actually making (they thought he was making millions, like EA Sports and the like) and decided they couldn't recover their legal fees.
