How much would the 5e88 hurt if every other player in the line-up is a range 1? Would the extra offense be worth the gamble? Which would be better at Forbes?

Line-up:

Chance--1b
Speaker--cf
Jackson--lf
EMPTY
Cochrane-c
Clemente-rf
Peckinpaugh/Bowa-ss
Whitaker/Herr-2b
Pitcher

How exactly would you get HAL to for certain slot one of them two at 3b?

You, yourself wont be able to set the lineups with them listed at 3b....

It wont let you, promise

I dont have a 3B on my roster so HAL will sub in my most expensive bench player. HAL will even sub the player into the batting order position i leave empty

There's got to be a 3B on the wire . There are some good ones in the cheapie range . McMullin , Higgins, Riggs,Nettles, just to name a few.

Free--do I have enough run production in my line-up for a cheapy platoon there? It seems to me that i will still have a lot of OBP with hose guys and very little pop.

In the given example, I wouldn't be surprised if Hal put one of your backups from 2nd or SS at 3rd base before he puts an outfielder there.

If one of the 2 you meantioned ends up at 3rd base their OBP they provide will get lost with all the e's they'll make . I have a platoon at Forbes going with Evers - Schaefer and its working out fine for less than 2M . Which means I have more $$$ to spend other places .

I'm in this league, I think he picked up Al Rosen...

That was a good point brought up, though, about you not being able to set the lineups. I guess you'd have to leave 3B blank, and hope that you were right about him selecting the next most pricey bench player. I'm not sure about 3B but I know that sometimes it happens when a middle IF goes down, they would give the first option to anyone who plays 2B or SS even if they're not rated at the position.
