I've never been in Yankee '56 before and I know I need to make a few changes. For starters, I wanted all lefty bats in the starting line-up but missed out on Mathews for third. I was hoping to get Doby in CF but someone else beat me to him as well.
List of things I am currently trying to do (Waiting for waivers)
1) Switch out Mogridge and C. Simmons to free up some money
2) Trying to slightly upgrade at Catcher
3) Switching out Bowa
Right now there are several options available on the waiver wire. Brett, Gehrig, Mantle, Yount, many catcher upgrades, more relievers... Help please?

Lefty pitchers for sure. You want to turn around those switch hitters and platoon players to bat from the right side.
Key, Lolich, Holtzman, Kaat, Blue...

My opinion, change the catcher(Teams will be stealing on you all day) and centerfield.
You need at least a -1 arm at those postions. You have some good offensive players besides that.........

Miller,
Offense - two big points of interest for a Y56 team - LH power, RH obp
Yaz, Reggie J., and Cooper will be great at that park. Eddie Collins could be a perfect leadoff guy there, but have never tried him.
Make a point of getting the best obp at CF, 3B, SS that you can get.
Or try a platoon to maximize options.
If Milt May is available, he is a BARGAIN for Y56 at C.
Pitching - Blue, Cuellar are usually OK. I have never tried Mogridge - I usually have Key and/or Carlton in that $ range. Get rid of C. Simmons he is not SP*. Go for a Holtzman or Tommy John type... Holtzman usually wins 17-19 for me in Y56, as does Key.
It doesn't hurt, if you can afford it, and I think you probably can't/won't, but a Clemens, Seaver type power RHP is OK there.
I feel like Schultz and Beggs is paying too much.
Don't forget your matchups in the division? What other parks are you in?
Good luck

I would look at a McBride/Kuntz platoon in CF. About the same price as Crawford and a nickel backup and takes more advantage of your park.
Cooper is not a great fit for a lefty-leaning lineup. Boog Powell would be better for the same price.
I assume Milt May is gone. What about say, a Sawatski/Porter platoon? Or Rich Gedman?
You have the right idea with your starting pitching, but get rid of Stewart. Pattin or Bahnsen would be much better.

Selkirk gives you good LH power and OBP. I've seen Boog play well there.

Do not, do not dump Cooper, he is golden in Y56, have had him hit 50+ HRs there a number of times.
Solve the Lefty killer situation, but not by getting rid of Cooper.
Keep Yaz, Jackson, Cooper, Bowa, Collins.
At catcher: for that team Hegan, Lake, Fosse, Gedman would be fine--make sure you get a good RH hitting catcher to face lefies--Earl Battey would not be a bad choice if available.
At 3B: You need a RH #2 hitter who has high OBP, particularly against lefties-- A Oquendo, Gazella, Protho or even MacDougal type.
At CF: Go with a RH lefty killer with great D, Lemon, Flood, Agee type.

This was my first team @ Y56. It was in first most of the season but collapsed towards to end finishing 4 games out. Hope it helps a bit.

I went with a cheap 4th starter. Dropped Schultz and picked up 4 different relievers. I dumped Bowa and went with Bush's OBP. Dumped Crawford and picked up mantle. It was suggested to get a RH lefty killer at 3B and I picked up Protho, dumped Ted Simmons for Milt May...
Any other suggestions or changes needed?
