how to determine losing pitcher?

How can Holtzman get tagged with the loss when he was injured after pitching to the first two batters? Although he was charged with one run, the final score was 7-2, so his run was not the winning run. I guess I always thought the losing pitcher is the one who gives up the winning run, but that's not what happened here. Is it more complex that that? I know a starter has to pitch a certain number of innings to get the win, but what about losses?

His run was the losing run because your team never gained the lead. If he had given up the run and then you took the lead he wouldnt be the pitcher of record.
