Not small ball per se...but low hr ball. I tried to focus on players with good avg. and slugging %, but low HR rates, in Forbes '09. The thought is that HR players will underperform in a pitchers park, and hence be overpriced, while these players will overperform since the bulk of their power comes in doubles and triples. My ideal lineup didn't turn out like I'd hoped come draft day, but I don't think it's all that bad:

5. Medwick, Joe (R) RF
6. O'Neill, Steve (R) C

Wishing right now that Nap Lajioe and Home Run Baker were in the game...anyway, the division is Dunn, Astrodome '86, and Royals '80. My big 3 pitchers are solid, I know, Drysdale is the experiment...low WHIP but a relativley high ERA for those players in his WHIP class...mostly due to a large # of HR. I'm betting a lot of the HR will become doubles, or better yet outs, and he'll outperform is card. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I'm not crazy about Medwick's defense, but it looks like a solid lineup to me.

Gilliam surprises sometimes.

Chance,Jackson, Speaker, and Gardener I'd keep.You need at least1 power bat. I'd get rid of Stewart Pattin, and Lyle.They make the pen weak. I LIKE your starters.With that offense and pen, maybe .500. Cheapen O'neal and turn Medwick into Somebody like selkirk.I'd cheapen Gilliam for maybe Evers and try to get a better ss or upgrade Gardener Or use the money to upgrade the pen.

Suggestions:

McLain over Johnson

Take Humps, Quis or Orosco over Lyle based upon hitters in division

Get rid of one of Sisk and Watt for S only SP or S/R to hid in rotation

Take Schalk over O'Neill, he is too slow

Take Doran over Gilliam, you have plenty of leadoff guys, you need a glove at 2B

Take Chapman over Parent

Get Furillo or Valentine in RF. If you need cash, downgrade Hubbell Williams or take Bush at SS

JJ
Val/Fur
Chapman
Gardner/Doran
Doran/Gardner
Schalk

A bit light on slugging, but not much left out there.

If I read it right you have Maz, platoon him with Whit at 2B if possible. For cash resources suggest dropping Sisk to nickle guy and Hegan to nickle C, you need only 1 mopper IMHO.

It might be a stretch $ wise, by McLain would be a better chocie here if you can swing it.

I think it's a good team. Nice pen and staff. Drysdale should be fine in your division although he is a tad pricey for a 4th starter (can only start once in the World Series). The logic you used to construct your offense is what I base my pitching teams on. Of course it also applies in reverse to your pitching. That's why I'm a big Hunter fan as my fourth starter in parks like yours (just make sure you have a Ruether, Speer, Frock, Cvengros, Vance type for the bomber parks on the road -- you definitely don't want Catfish starting in Baker).

I'm not a big Bush fan and really don't like Doran. Don't like Shalk either. I don't see the point in having the guy who bats 8th have a large part of his offense as walks. And other than that he is a weak singles hitter and not a very good one at that. I prefer a catcher with hits who clutches up for the 8th spot. But that's just me.

I would strongly recommend Whitaker for Doran or Evers for Doran. If Bowa ain't available, try Aparicio or Wills instead of Bush. If you make the changes at second base you could then pick up Stock or McMullin at third to platoon with Gardner.

I think the team with those minor changes should be a contender. Certainly better than .500. Good job. :)

I'd keep Bush Doran and Schalk. With the changes already made it is a contender. If you knock down Drysdale, up Sisk for a lefty in the pen. You could use 1.
