i do not think the rules affect the membership in the finals...

i think the rules are fine. what ever rules we set up, there will be an advantage to those who understand the rules and establish a strategy accordingly.

a division winner deserves more points than a wild card winner. any other outcome is silly...winning a division is tougher than coming in second in all cases.

when are the finals? :)

It's unfortunate that your "domination" doesn't quite extend into our "LOTO" final league this year...I really could have used a "patsy" to pad my win totals

This is true. I high-tailed it out of LOTO the minute I heard cristano was joining. :P

Fear you!? Maybe those leagues fill slowly because people don't like you. :P

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but another improvement for next year would be to require everyone to play rounds 1 and 2. It seems like there may be some who jump in after observing the game for the first couple of months. Not sure this leaves those of us who jump in quickly on an even playing field with those who lurk for a while. And I agree that it would be best to insure that we all face a similarly diverse group of opponents rather than permit cherry picking.

Dropping your lowest score

Postby Coffeeholic » Tue Dec 13, 2005 5:49 pm

Currently teepack's poll regarding dropping your lowest score shows very strong support.

Am I being too skeptical in advancing the hypothesis that of the original 72 members of this year's tour, only 20 or so have a shot at reaching the final round, hence leaving the majority of members speculating: "If I only hadn't had that lousy team, I'd be right in the thick of things"?

If we do end up going this route with next year's tour, I'm sure that it will keep the excitement level up for more members as it will allow more to "stay in the hunt". Unfortunately, this may come at the expense of penalizing those members who consistently field quality teams.

Guess it boils down to whether we want the tour to be a competition where we can keep the "excitement level" higher for more managers, or if we want it to be a competition which will reward those member who consistently perform at a high level?

According to the latest standings, I'm in the top 12 and in line for a finals berth. This despite the fact that I've had 2 teams finish well under .500. I've had to field a team in every event just to try and get my point total high enough to overcome those losing teams (which were victims of baseball luck as much as anything).

If I had been able to drop one of those teams I may not have had to play in every event, which would have saved me a few bucks. But I also might not have had the as much fun as I've had working my other teams to their highest point totals possible. So I think there is plus and minus' to what Coffee points out.

There's pluses and minuses to every scoring system you could come up with I'm sure. I had one bad team and comfortably made the finals anyhow and last year I couldn't overcome three mediocre teams (though none really bad) even with one title and one loss in the Finals in the last two events.

The fact of the matter is that we all play under the same rules all year. We knew what the rules were ahead of time. We'll know what the rules are ahead of time next year as well, no matter what changes are implemented. Then we have at it. Some years the "best" person may not win. Think of how many times the "best" team has won the World Series recently (not that often). If the best team always won, what fun would sports be?
