Is HAL gettng smarter?

I've never seen HAL do this before in my seasons of Strat:

Fletcher is called in to bat for Polonia against LHP Burgmeier, HAL counters with Niedenfuer an RHP, so HAL goes to LHB Sheridan who pops a dinger.
Almos as though HAL knew what it was doing
