Hershiser as a closer?

Postby sphilipp8 » Mon Oct 09, 2006 6:46 pm

Has anyone tried using a guy like Hershiser as a starter and a closer? What would HAL do if you did not set a starting rotation, set your per game starters daily (so HAL doesn't know who you want starting in the future) and set Hershiser as your closer? Would HAL use Hershiser on days he didn't start? Would there be any fatigue problems?

I have never used Orel in the dual role

I have used lesser pitchers (Kison / Comer / Pastore / Falcone) and a host of others in dual roles (start / relief).

I'm sure the way TSN established its pitching parameters your dual heavy use (not light spot starts) will result in pitching fatigue.

If you search the web, you'll find the SOM rules regarding starts and relief effects. Unfortunately, I don't have them handy for you.

If anything, I'd leave Orel to starts for now and check his controls to not relieve during blowouts (which HAL will typically do!).

Why not just try it and see how it goes?

If he relieved only, considering the number of IP on his cards, he should be able to giveyou a Konstanty or even Mike Marshall type year outa the pen. This can be very handy. I've had a 20-win season out of Holland as an R3 with a lot of innings, and a 200K season from clear. I imagine Orel can outdo both those guys, if the computer follows its typical pattern.
