On Second Thought, ATGIII Still Blows

Postby jsam9801 » Mon Oct 09, 2006 9:08 am

OK, I gave it an earnest shot. I played 10  ATGIII teams and you know what, ATGIII does not come close to BTT80s. Even with all the new players, the game just does nothing for me.

I picked using good 'ol diamonddope to no avail. I am the Mario Mendoza (.500 being the benchmark, as opposed to .200) of ATGIII  . Even with the new players, the game becomes stale after 20 games. The mystery card adds soooo much to the game.

Plus, the managers are so much better here. Anyone finding ATGIII close to BTT80s?

It took you 10 teams to figure that out?

Perhaps if you won a little more, you'd find the game better? That's usually the way it works.

I agree. The player pool is awesome but there's simply nothing to do after the season starts, and if you don't guess right before game one there's no way to adjust.

I have played and won in every game SOMO has put out. They all have their good points. If you are strictly a mystery card guy, you will always thing the 80's is the best.

That's not true anymore. Most ATG3 leagues have the same "drop fees" that 80's has: 5%/10%/20%.

Durantjerry, seriously, what advantage do any of the other games have to Back to the 80s other than (i) being able to "play" with Koufax, Mays, etc... and (ii) the ability to spend $25 on a draft and not have to worry about making any decisions after the first couple of games?

I can see in extreme circumstances that there are management decisions like (i) all the teams in my divisions are 75% lefthanders so I am going to add drop more guys that can hit lefties or (ii) tweaking the lineup for whatever reason (but I think Torre proved that that doesn't really make that much of a difference assuming it was set up pretty good to begin with).

I am not trying to sound like someone who says "game X is better than game Y and you are wrong if you dont think so." I honestly am wondering what I am missing about the other games that make them more popular than this.

I understand that it is nice to have more certainty, but where is the "fun" after game 10?

Mystery and mastery

Since there is ALWAYS that element of surprise with the 80s game (both good and bad), it will always have something the other games do not offer. Seems to me that all the other games are for number crunchers who want to beat the system. BTT80s just feels more like regular baseball -- you don't know 100% for sure what you have, up and down the roster. You have to "trust" your guys. There is also a very real chance of improving your team after a bad start, since even cheap cards can have some great years.
